I have already found several places in Lower Austria and Burgenland where these wonderful colorful birds live in the sand holes of a hill. But probably the best place is in Burgenland near the Lake Neusiedler where I took these pictures. There should also be some places in Upper Austria where they live during the summer but as far as I know these are all on private property, so I am not able to get there, and the people who own this land don't let photographers like me take pictures of these wonderful birds. So I don't have a chance to take pictures of them here in Upper Austria. Whenever I want to photograph them, I need to drive to Lower Austria or Burgenland or even Hungary where their breeding spots are not on private land.

I am also looking forward to visit the Lake Balaton or the Kiskunsag national park in Hungary, there should also be several nice spots where you can watch and photograph the bee-eaters. The Bee-eaters live during the spring and summer in Europe but in winter they migrate to Africa where they spend the cold time of the year. I always find it very amazing that these birds always find back to the place here in Europe.

They spend a lot of time sitting on branches and examinating the surroundings. Picture: Florian Glechner.

Hello there! 😊
I've never seen these birds before, but I must say they are gorgeous, so many glorious colours to enjoy while you watch them. I can only imagine how stunning they'd be in flight with all those colours. 😊 Thank you so much for introducing me to them. 😊
God bless you. 😊 Have an awesome day! 😊
