Buterin hinted at the imminent launch of sharding in testate Ethereum.

Development of more efficient solutions for blockchain scaling is one of the most urgent tasks for Ethereum network. Acne Buterin this week hinted that the project will soon begin testing a new scaling technology, known as sharding.

During the discussion of the epidemic of cryptocurrency itself on Twitter, the co-founder of the network hinted at the imminent launch of sharding in the Ethereum testnet. Buterin did not announce any deadlines, but said that Leeroy, a decentralized competitor of Twitter, would be a suitable candidate to participate in the experiment.

"I hope they will be able to participate in the testnet for sharding soon, when everything is ready," Vitalik Butorin wrote in response to a comment about the possibilities of verification of Twitter accounts on the blockchain.

Soon the answer was hidden, but the full version remained available here:

Vitalik Buterin and senior developer Nick Johnson often emphasized the important role that sharding can play in the transition of Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake for the verification of transactions on the network.

In November last year in Taipei Buterin announced the intention of the network to reach the Visa level in terms of transaction processing over the next 3-5 years, told Trustnodes. Sharding has been identified as a critical component towards achieving this goal. For comparison, Visa currently processes more than 1,500 transactions per second, while Ethereum makes an average of 10-30 transactions.

Sharding essentially splits the network in smaller segments, known as shards, each of which contains an independent entity and transaction history. Last September, senior developer Nick Johnson explained that Ethereum was working on its sharding vision, calling the technology "a series of ideas in development, not an deployed system."

It is unclear how long it may take to integrate Ethereum with the sharding Protocol, but such an implementation can give a strong impetus to improving transaction processing efficiency, preventing network congestion.
