All good points. Unfortunately, BTC has the lion's share of accepted usage by merchants right now. Much more difficult to find merchants that take ETH, LTC, etc.
BTC for me, seems much better suited as a gold storage point; large sums can be transferred fairly quickly; but not worth paying fees for micropayments.
One reason I really want to see STEEM be more universally recognized as a great alternative to BTC. No fees. Fast transactions. Micropayment heaven.
But part of that, is to start demanding of your retailers! Honor BTC! Honor ETH!
And once that's working, we can get them to include others.

i use http://www.coingate.com they have a shapeshift API to allow you to take all shapeshift coins as payment.
That is really the future. where you as a merchant dont care where it comes from.
