Bitcoin Sent Via Radio Waves, With NO Internet Connection

in bitcoin •  6 years ago

In an impressive first announced on Twitter a few hours ago, user @nvk announced he was able to send Bitcoin without any internet connection, or satellite communication, using just Earth ionosphere. He was using amateur radio equipment and a brainwallet.

This is experimental, non-commercial and probably not very secure, as the thread above will point out.

But even in this case, the fact that Bitcoin can be sent from one part of the Earth to the other, without using internet or satellite communications, is absolutely impressive.

This possibility was described, theoretically, a few times by Nick Szabo, one of the most respected crypto personas in the world, but now it was proven to be true.

I'm really looking forward to an article describing how this can be done with amateur radio equipment.

Remember reading an article in a magazine put out in support of the Timex Sinclair, in the 1980's, explaining how to send a transmission over a CB Radio instead of a modem. This idea is not new. 😎

Sending information via modulated radio signals is quite old, indeed. But sending - successfully - information that is proven - cryptographically - to be true, that's quite a feast, IMHO.

Good point. 👍

Probably the MOST interesting thing ive ever seen proposed for crypto, if this could be done easily and some how also securely it could overtake the current money system from every angle. The internet as great as it is can be blocked, shut down, hacked and tracked.. this is a-m-a-z-i-n-g

Awesome news

I think this is epic, @dragosroua. Whether anything else comes of it, or it inspires some other type of protocol, the fact that there was no need for third party access to transmit this transaction is the important part. Security and efficiency and speed and whatever other potential downsides are all things that can be solved. Getting it from A to B is monumental, and I hope everyone realizes this.

I can't tell you how many times I've thought about getting a ham radio, or a radio transmitter of some kind. It's always been about the money and the use. Now, there's one more potential use, and I'm thinking about getting me one again. :)

Wow Lots of new ways are coming in this was very impressive must not be that secure but definitely a path breaking thing for crypto

This is impressive to hear about

It proves that bitcoin is easy to transfer to any part of the world, with out any cost.

Another milestone in decentralized transaction

probably not very secure

I'm not sure how it works, but it probably will use an internet connection in the end, they might send the order with the keys via radio waves to a receiver that is connected to the internet but it will surely use internet... And it's probably really unsafe since everyone can see the radio signal, and if they happen to be able to decipher it you might lose all ur BTC...

Just read the coindesk post about this and it seems I'm right, that they send the transaction via radio waves to a receiver that is connected to the internet, they also made a good point though, it would be very useful for vending machines for example, because the owner wouldn't have to pay for internet connection, he would just need to pay for the radio wave emitter.

Imho this is not the fix for such a thing, since we are moving to an age where we can get internet almost everywhere on the planet! Elon Musk wants to put satellites in orbit to provide internet to the whole world, really fast internet!

It's a cool concept, but it probably won't be useful...

Wow man! This is really an important milestone!

This is truly impressive! Could this be the future..?

Something really wonderful and very sophisticated technology

Does it make it easier to send the bitcoin? In all, the idea is to be secured with things like this. If its not secured, it's not easier
