in bitcoin •  8 years ago

Code found in BitmainTech's open source Github library, Bitcoin's largest mining hardware manufacturer, appears to have a remote kill switch which according to Bitcoin Magazine and other experts, could be used to turn off more then 50% of the Bitcoin mining network on a whim.

According to Peter Todd, access to this part of the code is not even authenticated. So anyone that knew about this vulnerability could have exploited-ed at mass, providing a great deal of power to black hat hackers and other parties invested in manipulating the Bitcoin network.

Bitmain is the biggest Bitcoin mining manufacturer and is currently one of the biggest supporters of Bitcoin Unlimited. By consequence opposing Bitcoin Core and Blockstream's scalability plan and the much coveted scalability solution, Segwit.
