When an online shopper, instead of buying directly from a retailer, chooses to make a purchase by visiting the retailer’s link on an online shopping cashback website, a monetary reward is generated by the cashback site and the buyer is paid after a successful purchase. The buyer would not have ordinarily received the cashback if he had purchased directly from the retailer.
By this reward or commission, the buyer is appreciated for making a purchase on the site thereby earning the customer’s loyalty which will make the customer keep visiting the site for more purchases and cashbacks.
But, have you ever wonder how these cashback websites are getting the money which they use to reward the buyers. The answer is simple. For a retailer to be allowed to display his link on cashback site, an agreement is usually reached between the retailer and the cashback site which cover the amount or commission the retailer will pay for every successful purchase made on the cashback platform. It is this agreed commission that the cashback website share and the buyer is rewarded with a certain percentage of the commission.
Retailers usually choose cashback sites to display and sell their products because of the huge traffic of buyers that visit the sites daily.
Some of the leading cashback providers include Topcashback, Ebates, etc.
Some cashback sites pay customers flat sum per purchase, while others pay a certain percentage of the total purchase amount. This variation has to do with the different operational model of each of the sites.
Payment methods usually use by cashback websites for commission or cashback payment include bank transfer, gift voucher, PayPal, etc.
But the cashback payment is usually not done automatically or immediately after purchase. Some do set a minimum threshold which must be reached for withdrawal can be possible, while some pay monthly, bi-monthly, etc as the case may be.
Again, some cashback websites have some forms of country restriction especially from developing or less developed countries. The restriction could be through the country IP or by the payment methods supported on the cashback websites. Paypal, for instant, is one of the common payment methods used which do not support many countries.
Truly, it gives some kind of joy and when you purchase an item and get some of the money used for the purchase back (cashback) not minding the amount. Some of us have used or patronized cashback websites not because we do not know how to buy directly from retailers but just because of the cashback we will receive at the completion of the transaction. I am also guilty of this.
Now here is the shocker. I read an article about privacy of data and personal information we register on websites which got me thinking. To satisfy my curiosity, I visited the website of one of the leading cashback sites – Ebates and read through their lengthy and boring privacy policy and T&C. Guess what I found. I discovered that , similar to other centralized cashback platforms, Ebates privacy policy states that they (Ebates) can share users personal information and other data their third party marketing service providers, financial service providers, affiliates, etc. By implication our data, personal and financial information on these websites are not really private.
Issues and challenges with the current cashback websites as explained above can be summarized as follows:
- Delay in payment of cashback rewards to buyers and consumers.
- Global accessibility issue.
- Users data and personal information privacy issue
