Where to hold bitcoin during hard fork?

Where is the best place to hold your bitcoin during the BTC/BCC hard fork?

Will holding the bitcoin in a paper or desktop wallet allow you to have coins on both blockchains after the split?

Or do you have to have them in an exchange?

Please advise oh wise steemit friends!
