Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphone will also support cryptocurrencies. The newly announced smartphone has more advanced camera's, supports 5G technology and is able to store crypto. This new smartphone will come in three versions, the S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra.
Support for cryptocurrencies has been pushed to the background though. There's hardly any mention of it on the official website. Instead Samsung focused on the 100x zoom options for its camera and its 8K video snap functionality.
Almost of the bottom of the promotional website Samsung mentions the Blockchain Private Key:
We created a secure processor dedicated to protecting your PIN, password, pattern and Blockchain Private Key. Combined with the Knox platform, security is infused into every part of your phone, from hardware to software. So private data stays private.
No crypto for $1300 Galaxy Z Flip?
One of the biggest reveals the Samsung's recent Unpacked event was the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. This foldable phone focuses on its compact design and aesthetics. Compared with the Samsung Galaxy S20 it has a lesser camera, and Samsung didn't mention any support for cryptocurrencies. However, the phone has Samsung Know incorporated. This means it has the possibility to secure data behind an encryption. Perhaps Samsung will offer support for crypto within the Galaxy Z Flip after all?
Samsung Blockchain Keystore is currently only available on the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. These devices allow consumers to store cryptocurrencies in a hardware wallet, while giving them access to decentralized apps on several blockchain networks. Right now these phones support Bitcoin, Ethereum, Klaytn and Tron.
Blockchain phones
Samsung has sold over 16 million units of the Galaxy S10. All these phones automatically have direct access to a bitcoin wallet. Which percentage of the phone owners actually use their wallets is unknown.
Samsung is one of the biggest corporations making steps into blockchain and cryptocurrency. Blockchain is an inevitable step for the mobile phone industry. HTC has already released a smartphone with integrated cryptocurrency wallets, while startups like Pundi Labs and Sirin Labs have their own blockchain smartphones.
