My First Bitcoin Meetup
I recently attended my first Bitcoin meetup and had an awesome time. Just wanted to share my experience with you and encourage you guys to get out there and get more involved in the community and attend a meetup or conference near you.
So something I've been wanting to do in the New Year is get out there more, meet more people, do more networking and basically just get out of my comfort zone.
I saw a local Bitcoin meetup not too far away and the time worked out so decided to attend.
It was a really fun experience actually connecting with people in real life and talking Bitcoin and Crypto as opposed to just talking to people on Reddit and other forums. It was cool to actually sit down at a table in person and chat with likeminded people.
It was interesting to see the different skill levels of people involved as well as what people were into whether it be certain coins, ICO's, etc. There were a lot of guys there who had a background in computer science which was interesting to hear more about the technology behind crypto as well as how to secure your exchange accounts, wallets, etc.
There were people of all skill levels. You had a couple guys who literally just got signed up for Coinbase and were waiting for their first buys to clear and other people who had been in the space for a while and had already attended numerous confrences, been involved in dozens of ICO's, etc.
I defintely plan to go back and meetup with this group again and would also like to checkout other local groups and even attend some confrences.
With this group I metup with last night we had all kind of agreed to meetup regularly, each research ICO's and then come together and share notes and tips.
Really interested to see where this goes moving forward. I had a great time and would definitely encourage you guys to attend a meetup yourselves.
Much different crowd at these meetups than 3-4 years ago. Nice to see how the space has grown and changed.

What was it like a few years back, only really techy people super into the space as opposed to the casual users?

These groups are part of the reason bitcoin amd cryptos in general will not fail. Banks and governments can try to discredit them(cryptos) as much as they want, but there is a growing community of people who believe in the technology and the application of blockchain in currency. That base will ensure the evolution and development continues! (Also hoping they USE cryptos for trade & commerce and arent all just HODLers...)

Totally agree, I think communities are very important. I see a lot of people on Reddit shitting on Steem and Steemit and I always bring up that we have a working project and a community, that's more than the vast majority of coins out there.

Reddit is a far more mature platform in terms of technical functionality as well as user base. The idea that another community could replace them is a shocker and an uncomfortable thought. Reddit has always been full of trolls though. Best to ignore those who shit on Steemit and continue to earn.... that being said, sometimes feeding the trolls is fun. Getting them worked up by posting something that triggers them makes fpr a great read. Get your popcorn ready when you do!

I thought I heard some news about Reddit maybe toying with the idea of somehow implementing Stellar into either Karma or buying Reddit Gold.
