Hardware VS Bitcoin

Will the advance of hardware keep up with the ever growing size of the blockchain? It seems to me that the database could become unmanageable at some point, even if the number of new coins is limited, the transactions will continue.
Will Bitcoin have to change it's method of handling the blockchain ? Some think so. What do you think?
