Wash your belt?

in bjj •  6 years ago

There is a funny debate I see from time to time in BJJ about whether or not you wash your belt. Is this same debate happening in other gi martial arts where a belt is part of the uniform?

I personally wash my GI the minute I get home, and have never washed a belt. I always figured it was the GI that took all the sweat and stink and the belt rarely came into contact with anything but the gi and the mat. They never seemed to be too bad and I didn't want to have to redo stripes as they are sacred! ;)

What are your thoughts?

Ever forget something you knew because it was rinsed out in the wash?

Ever noticed someone or have someone notice your funky belt?

Whats your strategy?

Funny Stories?

Timing is funny. The head instructor of the main gym just posted this, "2018 and people still believe that belt can’t be washed 🤦🏻‍♂️
Seriously it’s actually disrespectful with your training partners not healthy at all.
Please wash your belt, wash your GI, wash your hands , shower and use flip flops around your training area specially if you go to the washroom.
Stop this myth the only thing that will take away your “mojo” is time away from training. Staph infection and ringworm are real do not wait until your friends have this to take action."

You can tell what he thinks!

Alcohol spray! Add a couple drops of fragrance. Or just straight! Most all areas and it's clean!

If I were a participant of jiu-jitsu, I would have washed my belts!

Cheers 🍻 @zekepickleman

What about your stripes? Your mojo?!? (that is probably a good strategy.)

I wash my gi a lot, but I've never washed my belt. It's bad luck :)

Attaboy! I hoped I wasn't alone!

Haha good to know that it's not the case that one should always wash his belt by default :D I throw it in once in couple of weeks just to not feel bad but Im pretty sure it would survive even one or two months without it...

Also I'd be afraid to wash it daily because of fear of destroying my precious stripes :D

I hear you. I see some of these guys with the very light purple belts and their stripes hanging on by a thread. They look badass I suppose which was never my intention personally.

Also, our instructor is a perfectionist when he puts the stripes on our belts and I wouldn't want to have to remake them! The old ones looking all worn and grey are great then suddenly they are brand new again! No way!

Hah! Thanks for posting! I think I scratched my chin off and on for 10 minutes trying to piece something together for you and it paid off.

Otage has good contests y'all!

Very funny. I never trained for stripes. Or rolled with the belt in mind. Should have I guess. But I can always learn more. I do have an amazing gi.

But yes clean it. My old one was stuffed into a plastic bag and then washed together. Alcohol spray for mats and shower areas. Regular cleaning. Respect the gym!

And talk to the coaches. Replacement of earned stripes is allowed to the best of my knowledge. Adding or self promotion is highly frowned upon.

And a spare belt with the instructor promotion stripes if your that OCD.

For that matter now I got 2 gis so that's nifty! Nice. Just remembered that.

Yah I know I am not superstitious and the washing machine can't take any mojo. I train for personal gain and want my stripes to come as slowly as possible!

Need at least 3 gis!

Lol yep. Gi collection. And just had a conversation with Chris Odell and gonna order some Datsusara gear...

Gi gets washed every single time it's worn. The belt gets wiped down with disinfecting wipes and/or a warm soapy wash cloth every now and then. I never toss it in the washer though.

Wipes would be a good way too. I may just toss it in the wash every month.
