How Nonviolent Direct Action Goes Awry: "I'm gonna break his jaw"

The man that was "hit by the car" is the lynchpin the protesters needed to justify their actions. From their point of view, this march that blocked the street caused a white man to drive into the crowd due to his lack of regard for black lives mattering. The fact that he was not arrested for these actions but held in protective custody further supports the notion that the Carbondale police stand by the BLM opposition.

However, from the beginning the media has made clear that this man was beaten and a smokebomb was put into his vehicle. Those two acts seriously muddied the claim the protest was trying to clarify. The point that I wish to elucidate is that had the event maintained some organizational boundaries, the discipline required to effectively participate in nonviolent direct action and had done so "openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty" rather than masked, tagging property, shooting off fireworks and smokebombs at 10:30 p.m., the results may have allowed the man driving into the crowd to be under the magnifying glass of the media as an example of the problems BLM

So you think they need some kind of steering committee? How do you think that would be best organized and by who?

It does seem like the police let the protesters do illegal things, "blow off steam" to a lesser degree than in Baltamore. Or, how they let the Carbodale Halloween party get out of control so the city and university could have a reason to clamp down on it. It would be interesting to see what the police departments internal strategy is and what their ideal outcome is.

Local medias agenda is stir the pot to get viewers to get ad sales. I'm sure the editors have their own opinions and try to push them when they can but violence and chaos creates anger and fear which sells ads.

I would recommend dialogue and workshops for those interested in participating. As with most situations, these will be lead by folks with agendas that may or may not align with the integral aspects of Black Lives Matter. Media is definitely a double edged sword that is able to illuminate problems and racism but is also going to capitalize on any incident by framing the story for their own demographic.
