How many transactions per second (TPS) can largest payment systems and blockchains handle?

in blockchain •  7 years ago

Visa — 24,000 TPS
Ripple — 1500 TPS
PayPal — 193 TPS
Bitcoin Cash — 60 TPS
Litecoin — 56 TPS
Dash — 48 TPS
Ethereum — 20 TPS
Bitcoin — 7 TPS

The Bitcoin network is currently facing huge scaling problem, but there are several solutions in the works. One of them — the Lightning Network protocol, which could enable much cheaper and faster bitcoin payments. According to Blockstream engineer Christian Decker, each channel in the protocol can handle about 500 transactions per second. If there are thousands of channels working simultaneously, theoretically speaking, the bandwidth of bitcoin could surpass not only all known cryptocurrencies, but also the Visa payment system.
