The place of energy generation in national development can not be over emphasised . Energy is the driver of economic growth and development and the engine of civilization . The pace of industrialization can actually be pinned down to how much energy a nation can generate and distribute . Energy is a national infrastructure that cannot be trifled with. The difference in industrialization between one nation and the other most times can be gauged by how much energy both produce. But the mode of energy generation and distribution has always been a factor that either mars or facilitates the growth of a people.
For most countries the centralized grid system has been the preferred option despite all the encumberance and inefficiencies associated with this system which we shall enumerate in a moment. In a country like Nigeria where I come from for example the average citizen feels the pangs of a centralized grid system the most.Grid collapses perhaps due to ageing and the consequent blackout is a regular experience . The power generated from the various generation station across the country are usually fed into the national grid for onward transmission to Distribution companies through the transmission lines littered all over the country.This system is marred by series of problems.
Electric power is equal to current multiplied by voltage ; P=IV=IIR, so a given amount of power can be transported either under high voltage and low current through transmission lines. due to the need to vary the voltage for safe delivery to substations, transformer which may be step up or step down are needed all these usually lead to losses in energy along the generation/transmission/ distribution ecosystem, power losses is a problem.
another problem associated with the grid system is that since there is a single platform any catastrophe or failure or disruption of whatever kind at a point that affects the transmission infrastructure affects the system leading to supply disruption and loss to customers and investors and a general loss in the nation's gross earnings and gross domestic product .
In Nigeria for example nationwide blackout has become a frequent occurrence due to the centralized grid system. The grid mode has therefore with all its enduring inefficiencies led to inadequate energy supply for urban dwellers and lack of penetration to rural dwellers thereby denying them the comfort ease and opportunities that electric power supply provides and guarantees. Most ruler communities and hinterlands lack access to electric power supply, while attempts more often than not have been made on electrification the centralized grid system has in many cases been the obstacle.
What is Eloncity offering. It intends to utilize locally and easily available renewable energy sources like solar energy through solar panels and storage batteries , wind resources to confront energy challenges posed due to dependence on the outdated centralized grid system.Eloncity is building an electric grid system that will help to increase electric energy penetration to both urban and rural dwellers .

There are three phases to Eloncity implementation.
Phase one is the collaboration with global agency to develop key building block technologies, like the battery energy supply system(BESS) energy management software DC appliances and customers sited power generators while in phase two the Eloncity will collaborate with research and education institution for full deployment of the Eloncity model in communities to test its utility and effectiveness while phase three which is the final stage will involve mass marker proliferation yo target markets around the world.
Eloncity solution though could be deployed anyway where electric energy is needed would be ideal for disaster prone environment for example during earthquakes or Tsunami, national grid are usually interrupted leading to lack of electricity but restoration of power in most cases takes time and due to entrenched bureaucracy but in the Eloncity solution such concerns of disruption will not arise.
in the Eloncity model the Eloncity token (ECT) will serve not only as a medium of exchange between suppliers and consumers but as a store of value.
All in all the project looks solid on paper and with a team with a track record of excellencies a future of more cost effective energy source and eco friendly might just be within reach.
