Cryptocurrency miner botnet has hijacked more than half a million machines and forced them to mine around 9000monero tokens, costing around $3.6mln.
The botent is based on the Windows exploit EternalBlue, a project of US National Security Agency and was subsequently deployed in conjunction with another NSA-developed exploit, DoublePulsar in the WannaCry attack. These servers have been primary victims of botnet as they are ideal hosts and have more capacity than usual computers.
The geography of attacks this time was Russia, Taiwan and India. At this time it has short-term success and cybersecurity workers tried to eradicate sinkholding technique, used by botnet.
