An environmentalist group in the Philippines is planning to make use of blockchain technology to clean up local rivers and seas, beginning with the highly polluted Pasig River.
In a collaborative effort between the Pasig River Rehabilitation Council (PRRC) and environmentalists from South Africa and the Philippines, an ongoing initiative is looking to save Pasig River.
27 kilometers in length, the river passes through capital city Manila and currently ranks as one of the most highly polluted rivers in the country. This is in fact the reason for the selection of this particular river, according to Mariano Jose Diaz Villafuerte, the CEO of BOTcoin and CypherOdin.
“We first came up with the idea of showcasing how blockchain technology can solve real-world problems and clean up the environment,” he said.
He went on to explain that although the initiative specifically targeted Boracay island, a tourist destination in central Philippines, the government shut down the island in April this year.
Because of this, the group then “
looked at the Pasig River instead as the next most important body of water in the country.”
CypherOdin is seeking additional collaborations with other government bodies aside from the PRRC to bring the project to fruition.

Villafuerte said that his company would offer the government its services free of charge according to Cryptovest.
His company is planning to install underwater Internet of Things (IoT) devices to monitor key data points such as tide levels, water quality and other indicators. With these in place, they will be able to carry out real-time progress tracking.
In turn, the information they collect will assist in creating long term solutions to the garbage and plastics problems facing the river. Furthermore, CypherOdin will employ the use of drones to undertake microscopic level plastic mapping.
A massive information campaign will complete the holistic approach, educating the public on the importance of environmental protection and proper garbage disposal.
