In this post I would like to explain to you what makes a blockchain so special.

In diesem Post möchte ich euch gerne erklären was eine blockchain so speziell macht.

The blockchain is a decentralized data structure and the basis for many digital currencies. In order to emphasize this decentralization more often, the "Distributed Ledger Technology" is often referred to, especially in the financial sector. This technology is distinguished by its decentralization, invariability and transparency.

Die Blockchain ist eine dezentrale Datenstruktur und die Grundlage vieler digitaler Währungen. Um diese Dezentralität stärker zu betonen spricht man, gerade im Finanzsektor, oft auch von der “Distributed Ledger Technology”. Diese Technologie wird durch ihre Dezentralität, Unveränderlichkeit und Transparenz ausgezeichnet.

Decentralization and cryptography

The core aspect of the blockchain is decentralization. This can be differently strong, but all applications have one thing in common: the blockchain is not on a single computer. In addition, cryptographic methods are used which ensure a high degree of security.

Der Kernaspekt der Blockchain die Dezentralität. Diese kann zwar unterschiedlich stark ausgeprägt sein, aber alle Applikationen haben eine Sache gemeinsam: Die Blockchain liegt nicht auf einem einzigen Computer. Zudem werden kryptographische Verfahren eingesetzt, die ein hohes Maß an Sicherheit gewährleisten.

The direct sending of values

The Internet allows the transmission of information, but not of values. This is where the blockchain comes into play because it provides a secure infrastructure to send assets or sensitive data without being dependent on an agent, ( peer-to-peer).

Das direkte Versenden von Werten

Das Internet ermöglicht zwar die Versendung von Informationen, nicht aber von Werten. Genau hier kommt die Blockchain ins Spiel, da sie eine ausreichend sichere Infrastruktur bietet, um Vermögenswerte oder sensible Daten zu versenden, ohne auf einen Mittelsmann angewiesen zu sein, sprich Peer-to-Peer.

Immutability

Posts which are once stored in the blockchain are very difficult to remove. For this purpose, all nodes on which the blockchain is stored must jointly decide to manipulate them. Since in the end each interested person can build a node, this possibility is
almost impossible.

Unveränderlichkeit

Beiträge, die einmal in der Blockchain abgelegt sind, können extrem schwer aus derselben wieder entfernt werden. Dazu müssten alle Nodes, auf denen die Blockchain gespeichert ist, gemeinsam eine Manipulation derselben beschließen. Da letztlich jeder Interessierte eine Node errichten kann, ist diese Möglichkeit fast ausgeschlossen.

Transparency

Depending on the level of decentralization, a system based on a blockchain is very transparent. For almost all digital currencies, you can track transactions, you can see who can add blocks to the blockchain using the proof-of-work system. The same applies, of course, to other data stored on a publicly accessible blockchain.

Transparenz

In Abhängigkeit des Levels an Dezentralität ist ein auf einer Blockchain basierendes System sehr transparent. Bei fast allen digitalen Währungen kann man die Transaktionen verfolgen, man kann sehen, wer welche Blöcke über das Proof-of-Work-System an die Blockchain anfügen könnte. Das Gleiche gilt natürlich auch für andere Daten, die auf einer öffentlich einsehbaren Blockchain abgelegt sind.

Consensus mechanism

As mentioned above, decisions are not taken by a central authority but by the entire network (depending on the governance concept). This form of organization can be very interesting from the point of view of democratic theory or decision-making. Thus, for example, participatory deficits and hierarchical organizational forms can be overcome.

Not all properties must be as explained here. Above all, private blockchains subject to certain restrictions may deviate from the assumptions made here.

Konsens-Mechanismus

Entscheidungen werden, wie bereits oben schon erwähnt, nicht von einer zentralen Instanz getroffen, sondern vom gesamten Netzwerk (je nach Governance-Konzept). Diese Organisationsform kann aus demokratietheoretischer Sicht respektive zur Entscheidungsfindung sehr interessant sein. Dadurch können beispielsweise partizipatorische Defizite und hierarchische Organisationsformen überwunden werden.

Nicht alle Eigenschaften müssen, wie hier erläutert, zutreffen. Vor allem private Blockchains, die gewissen Restriktionen unterliegen, können von den hier getroffenen Annahmen abweichen.
