Europe as a leader in the blockchain industry

In order to consolidate Europe as a world leader in the development and implementation of blockchain technologies, the European blockchain partnership is to be a means of cooperation between Member States in exchanging experience and technical and regulatory expertise. The partnership should also be involved in the preparation and launch of pan-European blockchains of applications across the digital single market for both the private and public sectors.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, welcomed the creation of a European blockchain partnership and added:

"In the future, all public services will use blockchain technology. Blockchain is a great opportunity for Europe and the Member States to review their information systems, promote user confidence and privacy, help create new business opportunities and create new areas for citizens, public services and society to benefit. The partnership that has been launched today allows Member States to work with the European Commission to exploit the huge potential of blockchain technology for better service for citizens.

Since launching the European Blockchain Observatory and forum in February this year, the European Commission has spent € 80 million on blockchain projects to promote technological and social progress. The Commission plans to spend an additional € 300 million in the coming years to finance progress in the blockchain industry.

Two blockchain projects already funded by the EU include MHDMD - blockchain for eHealth - and DECODE, which provides tools to enable individuals to control their personal data.
