Federal minister of Finance Van Overtveldt ordered a study of the possible use cases for blockchain in VAT-compliance, but also for the customs department and the third pillar would be property registration.
If the study shows positive results, the study will be extrapolated to all accounting, banking and notary departments of the Belgian federal government. The country of Georgia is a great example when looking how blockchain could reduce the number of state officials, where now the state manages to do the same job, but with 66% less staff.
During a brief interview with minister Van Overtveldt, he stated that blockchain fundamentally challenges the role of the state anno 2018. He even mentioned that a significant staff reduction like in Georgia is a possible outcome for the following years.
