Researchers at blockchain security company PeckShield found a fatal vulnerability named "Freether" on the RLPX protocol. An attacker can implement a defect through the geth discovery protocol and launch an attack on the affected geth node causing the memory resources to be exhausted which in turn causes the affected node to collapse. Because the RLPX protocol is more low-level it has a wider impact and a greater degree of harm than the previously disclosed "fatal message" vulnerability caused by the defect of the geth LES protocol. It is worth mentioning that this vulnerability can be exploited as a DDoS-like attack. Although it can control the expansion of its influence to a certain extent by limiting the total amount of resources it is difficult to fundamentally contain it.
