20 Minute Blog a Day - admitting you have a problem is the first step

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

I almost missed today. I missed yesterday but I wrote a real blog so I figured I got my 20 mins in already.

Tonight I want to give my 20 minutes to write about a real problem I have been coping with my whole life... it eats away at my spare time and ruins my potential to make new friends..

I'm a Chronic Re-reader.

Yes, this is really a problem. And by new friends I may have meant book characters inside my head.. but they do really become like friends.. lol

The Problem

Each time I go to start a new book I think of an old one I haven't read in a while, convince myself I've got too much going on and couldn't possibly give my FULL attention to a new book so I'd better grab an oldie but goodie so if I get distracted or forget to finish it.. well I've read it already!

That is how I picked up the Chronicles of Narnia a few weeks ago instead of The Source - this new book my dad lent me.

Don't get me wrong, I do have a variety of favorites I circle through so it'd been a few years since I last read C.S.lewis and there's juat so much knowledge in that series. I've truly only really read it through twice..

and here I am justifying my problem to you all!
Classic.

Do any of you have the same problem?

I've heard people say they'd never read the same book twice. I can't help but cringe at that... how do you even know it's that good until you've read it twice?!

Truth be told I'm about to begin The Last Battle, (that's the last book in the chronicles of Narnia - but I hope you know that already LOL) - and I'm ready to start over.. I think this may be the right tine to jump into a new book!

Secretly, The Stand by Stephen King is calling my name... it seems fitting to keep the epic battle of good vs. evil theme going.. but I'm gonna try to ignore that little voice and read The Source or maybe Be Here Now.

I'd love to hear if anyone has the same problem and if you do - what are you're go-to books?

That's my 20 mins for tonight!

thank you for reading and your kind comment@sami7780 :) I used to get headaches from the books at school too! lol

please do not forget to check my blog post, if you like

yeah school books make headache, life book make pleasure

Thanks @amariespeaks . You know I have a worse problem and that is NOT reading any kind of book lol. I really do. Although I was proud of myself to read my first novel outside of College this Summer at the Beach. It was called " 19 Minutes" about a girl and a school shooting. Really excellent.

oh no! @robertandrew you're right that is a worse problem :( I hope you'll find time to pick another book up - or stick an audio book on while you're commuting or whenever you've got some free time! Neural plasticity is no joke, don't use it - you lose it! ;-) <3 I will check out 19 Minutes. Thanks for the recommendation and for taking the time to read my post !

Wow, you reread too. Okaaay¡ 😃 once you've ventured into Georgette Heyer for some light humorous fun reading, might I also suggest trying a story from first century Rome. Lindsay Davis writes of an 'investigator', and does so in a very humorous way. The Flavia Alba books are what you will find in bookstores today, but try first to find the stories that pre-date that heroine, of her adoptive father Marcus Didius Falco. There must be about a dozen, off the top of my head, I don't recall the titles too well, but the stories, the background, and the manner in which they are told, I thoroughly recommend. 😇

@simon62 with your natural abundance of information I would have thought you read a new book every day! so glad I'm not alone in this struggle.
I am adding your recommendations to my must read list - Heyer's already in line ;-) I'm headed to the library this weekend !

Heyer did write a few detective mysteries as well, if you like Agatha Christie's Poirot. I have in my time read as many as three books in a day, but that was when strung on string in traction from the ceiling. 😜

I couldn't even begin to imagine how many books I have read, I read them once & don't even keep them, I must move on & learn something new. Your post did make me think what my collection might be worth now or how big my library might be.
I see life as a disposable product & everything within it, One day & at any time it all comes to an end & I was made aware of it at an early age through witnessing loss. I made a promise to myself that day & have remained steadfast & stuck to it.
The only thing I can possibly take from this life to the next is experience & knowledge. Material things in this life will not be making that transition with me so the real value in anything material from this world is the experience & knowledge that I can learn from it.
The materialistic things in life are all just tools to help us achieve enlightenment. I believe we all have different lessons to learn in this life & if your conscience is telling you to go over the same material I would have to say go with your gut feeling & read it again, be that the 12 volumes of the Talmud or Janet & John something is attracting you towards the goal of redoing that task. If you have an itch you have to scratch it or it will drive you nuts.

you are very wise @professorhobo :) more and more I'm trying to accept this mind frame and let go a bit too - mid 2017 my family and I greatly downsized our life due to a multitude of obstacles and that really was a kick in the ass to me to be like, hey, all these "items" and "objects" do not define me and they are certainly not what brings happiness, I don't need them to be happy.

I do feel like my gut knows I can get more out of the book - so I reread it, and I do get something new and enlightening each time lol thank you for the insightful comments!

You made me wonder - how many books have I read? what does my "library" look like ? I usually rent them at the library, although I do own a few copies of my old favorites.. mostly my sister has inherited my old collection as my current location doesn't allow for much storage lol

thanks again for taking the time to comment and read my blog! <3

No need to thank me for reading, I am hopelessly addicted to reading, you should see the state of the old laptop I use for this, If it died today I would just be in the library every day using theirs <3

I love the topic! I have not read very many more than once , but that doesnt mean I wouldn't. I have read business and self help books multiple times - but I realize that this isn't what you are getting at. When it comes to novels - I haven't had the time to sit down and curl up with a novel in a long long time ...the other day I had a hankering to re-read my lord of the rings series but just didn't have the time , but I remembered that I had the DVD - so I watched the movie ( I can already see you cringing at that right now) - it was somewhat satisfactory , but nothing like the rich , detail woven path a novel takes you down. I usually get to read when I go on vacation or travel on planes or long distance road trips - I always savor those moments

LOL definitely cringed at the mention of the movies! though those were done alright - if you only watch the movie and view it as separate from the book version it gets less under my skin.
I do read a ton of self-help books/audiobooks too but surprisingly those I usually read only once.. except a prized few I hold dear to my heart <3
thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!

Well now...this is hardly a problem in my books lol

I began reading as a kid, taught high school English as an adult but always managed to find cool books for the kids to read (I taught at a Fine Arts School, so I could always make a case for good literature:), and now continue to read AND re-read. You mentioning "The Stand" made me smile; it was one of my favorites growing up (I loved Stephen King), and I reread it plenty....and totally saw something new each time I did. I may have to go back to it now!
Loved the blog....since getting on steemit, I've read less and just told my husband last night that I need to reschedule my time a bit to get more reading back in. Actually, this is my last comment here and I'm grabbing a book and heading to the beach:) Cheers!

Yay! Good for you! It is so easy to get wrapped up in Steemit and lose track of time! So cool you love Stephen King too - he's really phenomenal. I'm glad I triggered that memory for you!

I'm glad you triggered it for me too! If you've never read an essay by Stephen King called "Why we crave horror movies", you've gotta check it out. I used to give it to my senior students and we'd have the best conversations!! Here it is if you want to have a look :) https://www.humbleisd.net/cms/lib2/TX01001414/Centricity/Domain/2669/whywecravehorrormovies.pdf

thanks! I'm gonna check it out - I haven't read this one yet, I'm excited!
