The city fixed the alley!steemCreated with Sketch.

We've been having occasional flooding problems in the alley behind the house for several years now. Whenever we get a heavy rain, the alley would turn into a pond. It got worse after they fixed some holes in the alley last year because they raised the grade a bit which just funnelled more water into the pond that would form. With a heavy rain, it would end up looking like this.

A couple of weeks ago, the city crew finally came and put a drain in the alley and hooked it up to the storm drain system. They started in the morning before I was out of bed, so I didn't get any pictures of the big rocks they dug out of the trench they dug. By the time I got out there with my camera, they were already putting in the pipe.

The pipe went right along the back of the garden fence.

The drain grate was installed.

Then they backfilled around the pipe with rock. Apparently the pipe is perforated to help handle the water load.

Then they finished backfilling with dirt.

The next day it rained hard again, the system seemed to work pretty well, no lake!

It will be interesting to see how well the drain handles the water next spring when the ground is still frozen. We usually get our worst alley flooding in the spring with rain and snow melt.
I have to give the city credit, once they figured out what they were going to do about the alley problem, they came and took care of it. Our property taxes in action.

Yay! It's nice to see the city problem solving. So often they just throw a bandaid on things. This looks to be a permanant fix!

I think this is going to solve most of the flooding problem. The storm drain system can handle up to a certain amount of water. If it rains hard enough for long enough, it overloads the entire system. I think that would be the only time this fix would not be effective.

Well researched.
