In world science, the extinction of dinosaurs is most often explained by "catastrophic" hypotheses. Dinosaurs (as well as ammonites and marine reptiles) could have been destroyed by volcanic activity, a meteorite impact, a supernova outbreak near the Solar System, and a drop in ocean levels. Russian paleontologists mostly adhere to the biosphere version: dinosaurs disappeared gradually due to the spread of flowering plants and the cooling of the climate.
