What kind of government should be in place on Mars once it is colonized? Well given our negative view on the current operating system that our undemocratic governments use on earth it should be no wonder that direct democracy has been proposed as a better model for governance on the red planet.
Direct Democracy is real democracy. Its the "will of the people" expressed directly in a referendum or ballot initiative. It should come as no surprise that thinking people are outspoken on this subject. Serial mega entrepreneur and visionary Elon Musk stated, "The form of government on Mars would be a direct democracy, not representative".
Civic tools must be upgraded to allow citizens to be accurately polled on pending legislative proposals. Inventor of the Web, Tim Berners Lee wants to see the web used a tool for democracy . In his Ted talk ,"A magna carta for the web" he includes it as something he is still awaiting to manifest
We can have direct democracy on earth before we make it to Mars. This inherent democratic human right is already embedded in the constitutions of many countries and is currently practiced in a variety of forms like referendums and ballot initiatives. Its only a matter of society being adequately informed on the subject.
I think the goverment, or rather the goverments, of Mars would be very autonomous and local at first, since the infastructure on Mars will take time to develop and thus the travel times will be slow between individual colonies.
Once it develops we would very well see a Mars Ecumenopolis, or a "planetcity", a city that spans across the entire Martian surface.
This Ecumenopolis would easily be one of the biggest economies in the entire solar system since Mars has the same amount of land mass as Earth does, except the land can be developed efficiently, and planned from the very beginning without wars or other some such straining the efforts to build it.
