I Was Blocked!

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

My creativity juice can't pass through. I'm talking about Artist Block and Writer's Block. It's both pretty hard to get pass. I remember not writing or drawing anything for around a year before. That was after I left Tumblr (a micro-blogging website).

I've been trying to draw recently, as you can see on my blog posts but I can't seem to complete a drawing. As of the moment I think I have 3 or 4 drawings in pending, lots of unfinished and un-started plans too. I recently got a hold of a device that I can draw on with a pen but that doesn't help when I can't really think of much to draw.

What I Need?

Inspiration! Tons of it.

Inspiration is the fuel of creativity. Making something requires a feeling you only have when you're inspired. There are positive and negative inspirations but both will push you to create, draw, or write. However, there are also bad influencers that may mess up your creativity, we may call them shitspiration. They're something to avoid.

Focus on the things that gives you really strong emotions, either of happiness or sadness. Anger is another emotion that may enhance your creativity but it's full of negative energy that I avoid it. I don't want people seeing anger in my art.

I want them to either feel good upon seeing my work or feel sympathy in case it's a sad one. Something to pique their emotion and interest.

Where to Find Inspiration?

It's literally everywhere, it just depends which ones affect you the most. Much like allergies. Some people may be allergic of pollen, or bees, or peanuts; and some may be allergic of seafood and dairy. Allergens are everywhere, but not all people are affected by it. You just have to look for the inspiration that hits your soul.

Things to do to Overcome a Block

Block are like big walls surrounding you, not just on the North. They're also a multi-layered barricade, not just ice, and usually its layers are tougher the deeper you go through the wall. This wall doesn't have holes in it and it's really high. It's a good thing you have 3 options: dig under, go over, or go through.

  • Dig Under: Cheat, but not really.Try making things easier, by using techniques or shortcuts on your creation, until you get back your pace.
  • Go Over: Find other things to do, outside your world of creation. Divert your frustration to other aspects or activities, then try if you've already passed your block. If not, repeat or try other methods.
  • Go Through: Simply do what you got to do. As what Earhart said, the best way to do it is to do it.

What I Do

I just try to draw and draw, bit by bit till I get my pace back. I haven't used any shortcuts yet but I used a different method: digital. So far, I think I'm 1/4 through this block and hopefully I get back to my usual pace and I'm able to make art once or more a day.

I also read tons of articles to overcome my writer's block. So far, I can say this is easier to overcome since I was able to write this whole article.

What Do You Think?

Maraming Salamat!

Thank you so much!

As an aspiring Digital artist and wanna be webcomic writer; I know this too. But I will draw like hell even if it looks like a Kid's doodle because I have to draw if I wanna become a Pro soon...

That's a good practice. Keep it up, I'll follow that advise too.

Writer and artist blocks? You and me both, dude. You and me both. 😂 Hirap ng running wild with so many ideas ang brain you can't keep up with it and ending ay artist (or writer's) block. Frustrating really.

Happy New Year sa inyo ng fammmm mo! 🎉🎆

So hard, especially I'm a full time employee and family man too.

Thanks, Happy New Year too!

I cannot draw these days though, but writings seems okay. Ahh the horror of going through something you don't want to go through. Hope you'll be able to draw again very soon! Those doodles looked really cool!

Thanks Lai. Need to be more masipag.

Woah! If you aren't, then I don't know** what being masipag means! ;)

Nice post po. This helped me a lot. I have the same problem dev. Registered on steemit last month. I thought I can't make any good post.

I hope it's not late for me to work on steemit.

Nothing is ever too late, you just have to find your place and pace. Things would just fall right into your hands the least you expected it to happen.

RandR (rest and relaxation) will help to refresh your mind and develop new ideas.

I should try this, this block may just be a burnout after all.

yes proven and tested , especially if you're just burn out :) and after all we all need that RandR :)

Try the #freewrite daily challenge by @mariannewest. It's fantastic to get you going when you can't think of anything or are blocked in your regular work.

I do this challenge a few times a week and get great results. She has a lot of good people taking part. See any of Marianne's "Freewrite Prompt" posts to check it out.

That will be fun, I tried Inktober too but failed, lol. Thank you for sharing!

Happens to me sometimes as well.

Sometimes you just need to take a break - a short walk, maybe go to the gym, grab a bite to eat, read a book, or do anything that relaxes you.

Most of the time, you just need more coffee :)

Thanks for the tip. I'm afraid a little too more coffee for me may induce a coma, jk. I'm already pumped with caffeine.

☕☕☕☕☕☕ lol same here.

I tend to have semi-permanent writer's block. I've been trying to chip away at it, but every time I set rigid goals for myself, I fall completely off the wagon. I'm hoping Steemit will be a way for me to write without really feeling like I've written. Either way, you made some good suggestions for how to get through blocks.

Steemit helped me get back to it. I'm sure it could do the same with you.

Could be frustrating, especially when it is something you really love to do.

You'll find your groove back pretty soon.

Happy New Year @deveerei and fam!

Thanks ate!

Happy new year to you guys too!

me, I just can't draw because of the season, its still at Christmas. hehe

The busy season. :D

Thank God artist's block does not apply to me. I get tons and tons of inspiration on whatever mood I feel.

That's great Gail, I wish the same.

I think you were just stressed that is why you get blocked. Anyway, just chill and relax. Have fun! <3

Will do. ;)

Good luck 🍀

Thank you!

Keep up the good work

Thanks!
