Father's Day meditation ( PAPA GOALS)

in blog •  6 years ago  (edited)

Father's Day, a day to reflect on Papa life. I have children that look up to me and depend on me just like I did with my Dad. Am I the perfect father? Definitely not, I'm still trying to find that balance.

My boys are half Japanese half Jamaican and one of the biggest challenges I have is making sure they are multilingual. ( English , Japanese and Jamaican patois). But because they are growing up in Japan, Japanese is the language they interact with the most, especially at nursery school. I took offence when a nursery school teacher said to me. " Your boys, they don't speak much English, that's such a shame." The question I should have asked her was, "why aren't you teaching all the kids English at the nursery school?."

My twins Yumar and Kamar actually do speak some English, but obviously Japanese is going to be the dominant language. As a father that works and has a side hustle, I can be a bit selfish with my time and on the phone constantly checking Emails, messages, sales, crytpo news and engaging on social media.

I know I need to do better as a father and so I'm setting some goals ( visions) of how I want to be /things I wanna do to better myself as DAD

DAD Goals

  • I really need to put the phone down once I get home and spend more focused time with my family. I think a lot of parents ( especially those with internet based businesses) go through this. We are addicted to the damn phones. I'm gonna try putting the phone in a different room until its time to work on the side hustle. ( The biz can wait till after 9:00).

  • I want to read to my kids more often. After a day at work, I get home, eat dinner with the family, give the boys a bath and then we watch some TV together ( We have been watching the Madagascar series for the last 4 weeks). I want to Cut some of that TV time and put it into book time. The thing is it's easy to default to TV. I'm already tired and winding down to go into to my office/den and get the side hustles running once they are off to bed. No more excuses, this will help them to be multilingual. This will stretch their imaginations and creativity.

  • I want to get healthy so I can keep up with Yumar and Kamar ( and just to be healthy in general). With the busy schedule and spending time with the family , health can be put on the back burner easily ( thats why most married couples with kids, get fat). I want to start working out at least 3 times a week. Now I only walk for 30 minutes most days and do some push ups and sit ups maybe twice a week. I need to choose the times and days to work-out and just stick with them and make the family know. ( Or wake up at 5:00 AM instead of 5:30 AM in the mornings and work out then;)

  • I want to start teaching the boys how to DJ and make music from now, so their creativity will branch out and they will have many ways to express themselves. I have a mini studio/den /office at home, so now its jut starting the entire process little by little. I think the time is right, before they just wanted to destroy everything.

  • I wanna start speaking to my kids in English and Jamaican Patois only. This is something that I started to do, but these days I have been slipping as it is easier for them to understand Japanese and communication happens a lot faster. SHAME on me, I gotta make sure the boys are multilingual, Japanese language by itself can't really take you places.

  • I wanna be kinder to my boys. A lot of the times I'm rough with them, shouting at them, grabbing them, telling them to get things themselves (Example: If they ask for tissue, I'll just say; " its right there, get it your self"). In my eyes its tough love, but I do think I can tone it down a bit.

Well those are my thoughts on my PAPA improvement. Just felt like writing this here, that way I can look back and see my thoughts and how I've progressed and possibly get some advice form the block. Happy Father's Day ( it was actually yesterday though). Thanks for reading.
