Transporting my doggo on a plane, in the cargo hold

in blog •  6 years ago

I hated that I had to do this but there was really no other way to get her up to my new home in the north of Thailand. I investigated a taxi but the driver wanted 20,000 Baht (around 700 USD) for the journey, which is understandable because it is pretty much the opposite end of the country. He would also have to drive back afterwards, so when i think about it like that, it's a pretty decent deal he offered me. However that was going to take multiple days and in the end I opted for a flight.

I bought the bigger travel cage so she had some space to move, put some treats and all her favorite toys in there also. I think she would have been fine but then after I was forced to leave her in the hands of the cargo people things might have gotten a bit stressful.

I don't really know what it is like in the cargo hold of these planes, but i would imagine it is loud and probably very scary. Plus I don't think the dog has ever experienced changes in air pressure.

I don't know exactly happened but when i finally saw her in the afternoon she had been in that cage for 8 hours. It irritated me a bit that someone had either removed or broken the water bottle attachment that was on the carrier, so she hadn't had any water for the whole day. I would imagine that they were careful but she was still getting shuffled from one vehicle to another, up convener belts etc and of course her favorite person wasn't there to help.

When I got her out of the cage she was very hot and needed to go to the bathroom pretty bad. When I got her some water she drank and drank and drank for a long time. She was definitely parched.

Anyway, i think she has forgiven me but I really don't want to have to put her through that again. I might need to get a shrink to determine I can't safely fly without my dog on my lap. That'll sort it.

Doggo didn't look real in the cage. I think it must be terrible , but at least there is no quarantine period to get them through. My parrot spent 3 months at Heathrow and was long enough to learn the jet engine noises. He hasn't used them for ages so maybe he needs to go back for a reminder lol.

Wow poor dog, that must have been very hard for bith of you. I don't know if we could do such a flight with our cats, one if them would definitely die because he is afraid of everything and this experience would be too much for him and it would break my heart to have him suffer like that :/

So it's good that your dog survived it and that she is hopefully now happy again.

she is definitely tramatized. In my condo if i move anywhere... to the kitchen, the bathroom, anywhere, she is right at my feet because maybe she thinks i am going to abandon her again and if she just manages to stay really close to me that wont happen. We are going to be here at least a year and the next time I have her fly I am going to get a doggy sedative. poor thing.

This a sad story.
What to say about it?
Maybe the taxi deal next time.
Or 2 taxis and a stay somewhere halfway?

So sad to hear that @gooddream .. i can feel your pain in your heart how u felt while travelling flight without your puppy on your lap... eventhough you are travelling in the plane i think your mind, thinking and heart would be on your pet...because we too have a pet which is pomeranian breed...i loved the first pic see her kind and cute look while she was in the cage...i downloaded that pic... don't leave her alone again man....
but np you are with your puppy..that's nice ...
Thansk for sharing,
Yours @summisimeon

Poor dog,I can see on its face on the first pic that it is worried. I imagine the same situation here on my country when some bus operators would not allow pet dogs to be carried inside and they want to put the dog in the bus compartment.

My dear gooddream, I imagine the anguish you had during the hours of separation with your beloved pet. To me these transfers seem traumatic, but if it is the only way to travel with them, no way. I'm glad that everything went well, here in my country, we knew of the case of the loss of a puppy in the middle of Christmas parties in 2014 in a trip between cities. It is painful to lose your pet to the irresponsibility of an airline.
The face of fear of your puppy inside the Kenner broke my heart, I'm really glad that he has passed the trip and is in his sweet home enjoying your love. A hug, my friend.
