What's happening with all these weird phone calls?

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

Lately I've been getting a lot of robocalls. What are robocalls? There's lots of types. You get a phone call from an unknown number, or from someone out of state; and instead of a person on the other end there's silence and a hang up, or there's a prerecorded message talking about your credit card (which you don't have) or your car insurance (for a car you don't have) or something else along those lines.

I don't understand what these robocallers are getting out of this. Where's the money in it? What data are they getting? Basically just why?

It's weird how much more often I've been getting them, and it's not just me. Over the past two years the rate of these calls has increased dramatically. The guygood-karma the storage center I rent from gets them too, on both his cell and his business line.

I think I'll start a text file recording each of these numbers and when I got them and what type they were. I don't know what I'll use it for, but I should have been doing this for awhile. Maybe I can dig something up about them over time.

If you have any insight to the robocall phenomenon, please tell me in the comments. It's crazy annoying, and wastes phone time (which costs people money).

If you live in the US there are laws that are supposed to protect the consumer from unsolicited calls. There was one case where someone took some of these companies to court to sue them for the amount of money it cost them on their cellphone bill. Here are a few story links that might give you a few ideas what you could do.

You can find out about a lot more with a google search on robocalls. I hope this helps
