The Dinosaurs And The Prairies

Drumheller, Alberta. Every small town seems to have the world's largest something, and in Drumheller, it's a dinosaur. You can climb the 126 internal stairs and stand in the mouth of this thing, but we're here for the museum, not the dinosaur models that can be found all over this town.

We stayed in a campground in Drumheller on the third night of our trip, and when we went to bed the air was fairly clear. Unfortunately, the next morning the smoke was incredibly thick and choking. The museum was only 6 km away, and sure to have clean air inside, so off we went!

The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology takes its name from Joseph Tyrrell who discovered dinosaur bones here in 1884. The museum is a major tourist attraction and houses one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs fossils.

I don't know much about dinosaurs, but I know what I like! What the heck, I'll just show you some photos of a few displays.

Hey look, mammals too!

The museum is fairly large, something like 120,000 sq feet. We looked at virtually every display, in part to avoid going back outside!

After spending the night in a hotel in Lethbridge, Alberta, we set out on day five with no goal but to drive east and get out of the smoke! We did no more exploring, we just drove. I will leave you with my impression of the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba - from the point of view of someone trapped in a car! Imagine these views, and then repeat each scene hundreds of times as the endless prairies roll past...

Coming soon: We reach the geographical centre of Canada, and I fall very ill. Should we cancel the remainder of the trip? Having travelled over 2,200 km, it's still shorter to just go home...

Those buildings in Saskatchewan are lovely. I crave that prairie stuff. Too much reading Wizard of Oz to the children. The boy would love to visit that museum - we are studying prehistory right now.

The homebody part of me that never wants to do anything says "Go home, man!" The normal, adventurous part of me says: "Carry on!" Good luck either way :)

The prairies are dotted with these old wooden structures which have been left to decay while modern structures are built are around. I assume this is large corporate factory-farms taking over from the family farmers of the past. That might be all in my imagination, however! What do I know? I just drove the car...

Drove the car and photographed? Impressive.

and sometimes I rode shotgun! :)

I was looking forward to hearing from you and now I'm glad you're safe. The museum must have been nice, I've never seen such a museum, so it was a pleasure to read your post.
Stay safe my friend and enjoy the rest of your trip!

Thank you, Erika, the museum was one of the highlights of the trip so far. I've seen dinosaur display before, but this was something on a whole different scale.

Glad to hear that.

Sure wish you could just turn south! I have a pleasant guest room you could stay in until you were feeling better. What an awful way to spend your holiday!

Next time Melinda! Or maybe you could come to Vancouver Island - during the non-fire season of course!

Thank you @pixresteemer!

Wow. My grandson would love that museum @keithboone.

Sorry to hear the smoke was still bad on day 4 and now we're going to hear that you got ill. 😱

Not exactly a relaxing holiday so far. 😢

Oh, he would love it I'm sure. There was one large room where you could watch the palaeontologists grinding away on their rocks digging the fossils out. It was all very educational.

Hey Keith, love seeing photos of your journey. The Canadian Pairies are awesome. Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. The smoke is causing a lot of this. It might be best to carry on and get away from the smoke but you might have to come all the way East..to the rock (NFLD) as they say. 😂
Take care ❤️.

I was born on that rock, and now I live on the other one! Alive and well in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Will try to make a post tonight, but if not, I'll be offline for several days at a cottage on a lake in northern Ontario :)

I hope you get better soon and you can continue enjoying that incredible journey! What a pity the fires ... By the way, great photos!

Thank you, I am slowly recovering.
