What was apartheid?

in blog •  7 years ago

From 1948 until 1991, the South African goverment segregated people of different racial origin using a strict system called aparheid, from the Arfikaans world for separateness. Everyone was classified as white, mixed race, black or Asian, and people from the four groups were kept strictly separate: they could not live in the same areas; shop in the same shops; go to the same doctor; attend the same school or even get on the same bus. Thousands of people were imprisoned for protesting against the system. After years of international pressure, including bars on South African goods being sold abroad and sportsmen and women being banned from all international competition, the government finally repealed the last of the apartheid laws in 1991.
