The Absolute Paradise That is Palau, Micronesia...

in blog •  7 years ago  (edited)

I watched a video of a place called Palau which spurred me to look in to the country a bit more then i thought i might as well make a blog of it, Palua whose capital is Ngarchelong is an archipelago made up of over 500 islands in the western part of the Pacific ocean in a region called Micronesia there are 3 officially recognised languages which are Japanese, Sonsorolese and Tobian.

I had not heard of the latter two languages before so looked in to it and found that they are native languages where Sonsorolese originated in one of the states of Palua called Sonsorol and Tobian originates from one of the South-west islands of Palua called Tobi the two languages are supposedly very similar and Tobian is only spoken by approximately 150 people.

Whist i was at it i thought i would look at some of the wildlife and found that there are quite a lot of native species some of which can not be found anywhere else there are too many to list them all (see full list here) so here are a few:

Colonial Era

Considering how much of a paradise Palau is i was surprised to find that it has quite an extensive history of conflict and had to add it to this blog, from what i have found it seems that the Spanish originally had the most influence in Palau which ended after the Spanish-American war which lasted from April 21, 1898 up until August 13, 1898 lasting a total of 3 months, 3 weeks and 2 days.

The Spanish went on to sell the country to the German empire in 1899, the Japanese then seized the islands from the Germans in 1914 after world war one, the League of Nations then put Palau under Japanese "administration".

So it sounds to me that Palau is still colonised just in a more subtle way nonetheless Palau is on my bucket list of places to visit.
