S&P 500
The Standard & Poor's 500 Index is an index of 505 stocks issued by 500 large companies.
Today S&P 500 2,872.87.
The S&P 500 index is the most well-known stock index. It powers countless index mutual funds and ETFs, and has become synonymous with “the market.”
Can someone help me understand how investing in S&P 500 index fund is a good long term strategy. I must be missing something. I looked back 20 years and it was 1,527.46 on May 24, 2000. It didn't return to that spot until March 2013 (almost 13 yrs later). It looks to me that if you put $10,000 in on May 24, 2000 and sold any time before March 2013 you lost money.Am I wrong? If so what am I missing?
It’s a great question and one that could have some doubting the benefits of a low-cost S&P 500 index fund.
