the sun ends its day
the sky's willed its heat; I stand

Looking out my window, I see a world of winter beauty. It's a rare sight in Vancouver. We are a rainy place in the darkest season. So when the snow does fall, it can be exciting, bringing light to that dark. Yes, it can be exciting ... in December.

Come January, I put my head down and work, hoping that when I lift it again, spring has kicked winter and his killjoy ways back to the tundra. And Spring was getting it done, and now, suddenly, she's not. Winter has her shamefaced for showing up too early and cowering under a blanket hoping no one will notice.

It is a mixture of snow and alternating cold, clear skies in the forecast for the foreseeable future; the foreseeable future, I have on good authority, is five days. Yeah, when you get that 14 day weather forecast, dudes are just forecasting last year's weather and hoping you won't notice. Notice!!! Fake news, pshaw. If you are going to be outraged, be outraged about the right stuff. At least fake news is original content. Fake weather ... its plagiarism.

Okay, back to the business of the haiku.

I took this photo about the same time last year, no snow in sight. But do not be fooled by the tropical looking sunset and the palm tree ... who told me to hurry up with my shot so he could go back to shivering ... it was a cold day. Beaches have a tendency to look warm, but with my beach, English Bay Beach, looks can be deceiving. It's like staring into a beautiful store window, not going in because you can't afford the markup. Here, the markup is freezing to death. So until the temperatures rise, and the price of crypto while we are at it, I stand way back from the water, cold, but fortunately not quite freezing to death.

Afterword

To any meteorologists out there who want to take this up with me, tell me your ... cough ... science has improved. Bring it on. I've signed no confidentiality agreement about your past blunderings. And I have pictures and videotapes and I've dated them too.

"...I put my head down and work, hoping that when I lift it again, spring has kicked winter and his killjoy ways back to the tundra." 🤣

But the haiku... that's a really good one... multiple meanings, from mundane to mystical (ummm... sorry about the alliteration, that just happened lol). A lot of resonance from three little lines :)

Thank you, Bennett. Haiku can be magical like that:) Very powerful ... sometimes:)

Okay, I'm late to the party, but I did laugh out loud at the "fake weather" comment. I can SO relate.

So many times, we can be ten degrees colder or warmer than our town's "official" temperature . . . where the heck is the thermometer? In a frigging oven, or down a well?

I highly doubt that, despite our numerous microclimates, we can be a full ten degrees off from anywhere in our county, much less in our small town. Someone is simply not bothering to actually check the temperature, and is just filling in whatever number they feel like, which may or may not have something to do with the amount of moonshine consumed.

Keep in mind that we live in TINY town, population less than 500 in the town itself, and less than 1,000 in the unincorporated county that includes us . . . and, I think, probably a fair number of local cattle are also included in the count. Just a guess.

For the record, you are living where Marek wants to be, as he has traveled several times to BC and has declared it the most beautiful place he has ever been, with the sole exception of the redwoods.

So you never know . . . we may be neighbors one day. ;-)

A condo in the redwoods is hard to get ... we really are the next best thing. LOL. Yes I also wonder where the magical thermometer is kept in Vancouver ... not on my corner that is for sure:)

You couldn't make me live in a condo. I've always disliked sharing walls.

I have occasionally found small unimproved lots in the redwoods, anywhere from a quarter acre up to around five acres, that don't break the bank. That would be much more to my liking.

My plan is to build a tiny house on wheels that we can take with us wherever we travel. No building permit required.

And yeah, the magic thermometer. For real. ;-)

That sounds like a great idea:)

It has always struck me as practical, since we have a small building lot in New Mexico, and several friends have pieces of land we can visit, but not build on.

Bringing our own self-contained tiny house seems preferable to an RV, and the next-best-thing to an actual stick-built house. Of course, our goals may change.

I would love to do something like that but alas ... if you can believe it. I cannot drive. I never really regretted that fact until recently. Hopefully I can remedy the situation soon:)

Being a Los Angeles native, that's hard for me to even wrap my head around.

In L.A., everything is so far apart, and public transportation is only minimally available, that you really can't get around without a car. There is a reason why Angelenos live in our cars!

Then again, when I was in Luxembourg, I was on foot nearly everywhere, and not only didn't need a car, but didn't really miss not having one.

I liked the simplicity of having nearly everything in walking distance. And, of course, public transportation in Europe is exceptional.

Europe is great for that ... where I live in Vancouver is a lot like that. I do love that:)

I enjoyed the haiku and photo but most of all, the writing. Nice work!

Thank you, brokeman. I am so honoured you come to read:)

Everything is going up, even the price of fake weather plagiarism :D The temperature here is starting to rise. We are at the end of our cold months. Come to our shores and you'll be warmed :D

Where are your shores:)

The Philippines :D

Lol I loved the bit about fake weather! It is true, at least fake news takes a bit of imagination, that is just plain lazy lol

The contrast of blues and reds in this photo are stunning, and so well matched in your haiku! You live in such a stunning place, even if it is freezing! :)

Thank you, Calluna. Yes in all seriousness I am very appreciative of the natural beauty around me:)

Oh what a awesome picture.
I really enjoyed the poem especially... the sun ends its day. Super

Thank you, moon:)
