One thing that Texas has done for quite a while now is to provide nice rest stops for the driving public. I travel the roads of Texas each week and I like the way the state has constructed these rest stop facilities. Between Houston and San Antonio on Interstate 10 you have two rest stops and one picnic area. The rest stops are space out about 75 miles apart and the picnic area is about in the middle of the two rest areas.
I thought I would share a little information about these facilities and a few pictures as well. Thursday, I stopped at the rest area just east of San Antonio near Seguin, Texas.
First, these rest areas are easy to access, the exits from the highway are of good length so you have plenty of time to slow your vehicle down after you get off the main interstate lanes, the same with getting back on when you leave, plenty of lane to get up to highway speed so you can merge into the main lanes at highway speed. A very safe design from a traffic stand point.
This rest stop is under constant video surveillance and has well lighted parking areas for both cars and 18 wheeler trucks. There is even a Department of Public Safety office inside the main building and it is not uncommon for the DPS to have a trooper on duty there.
The buildings at this rest stop are constructed of large white limestone block and have a very good look to them. The rest rooms are very large and kept very clean, there are maintenance people there 7 days week looking after the upkeep and cleanliness. Vending machines are there for drinks and snacks and are always well stocked.
This rest stop even has a walking path so you can take the dogs for a walk and they can do their business away from the main area. There are nice covered picnic areas with tables and a playground area for the kids to get some energy burned off before they have to get back in the car and head down the road.
The unique part about Texas rest stops is that most of the rest stops incorporate a little about the area and the history of the area by using displays and video screens that show a short movie video. This stop near Seguin features the story of Juan Seguin & his family, it also has the story about the famous cannon and how the slogan “Come and Take It” came about.

So if find yourself driving in this great state of Texas and mother nature is kicking your kidney’s silly don’t hesitate to stop, your kidney’s will appreciate it and you may just learn something about Texas history that you didn’t know.

Those are truly some amazing rest stops. It always nice when some money is invested into making sure those that spend long hours on the road have someone decent to enjoy when they need strength out their legs and take a short break.
You have a lot of history and culture as well from the looks of it those rest stop areas. I wish more states focus on creating some better area. Then again that would also require the people using them to have some respect for it.

I believe that it if were not under video and live attendants those displays would be history as well. There is usually a person working in close distance of the displays. But the state years ago had pitiful rest areas, they have really upgraded in the last 15 years.

PA has rest stops along the toll roads, and while some are better than others, none are as nice as the one's I've stopped at in Texas. Very well designed and maintained and a great find for weary travelers.

Love Texas rest stops. They're great...or you can stop at Buccee's. Is that how it's spelled? We always stopped at the ones in between Dallas and Houston. There were two nice ones at either end. My parents always were paranoid when I went there by myself with all the kids, but sometimes that was easier than running into a McDs. Thanks for sharing the info and cool pics. :)

It would be spelled Buc-ee's . The rest stops are definitely less expensive and even cleaner than some Micky D's for sure. Most of the rest stops even have the private "family" rest room which I failed to mention in the article.
