Remembering dates has been a hit and miss proposition for me my entire life, there are some dates that I remember without any problem even though I no real reason to remember them any longer since I have lost touch with those people over forty years ago, that being their birthdays. I had two friends in grade school that were born on July 2 and every July 2nd it comes to mind. I have not seen or talked to either of them since we graduated high school in 1974, yet I still remember them.
Today, July19th is my oldest brother’s birthday but I never could seem to remember it, for some reason I always would be a month off and would call him in June on the 19th and be a month early. This year I didn’t call him in June and I will be calling him today, I think this might actually one of only a handful of times that I will have gotten it correct. The funny part is I have never had a problem remembering the date he married his wife and I have always called them and wished them a happy anniversary on October 2nd every year since 1972.
I don’t know what it is about his birthday that has given me so much trouble remembering but thanks to the calendar on my phone I think I have finally gotten the solution literally in the palm of my hand. Ever since calendars started being placed on phones I have used them for work appointments and meetings, sales promotions dates and trips but didn’t use it for personal stuff, like birthdays. Last year I finally broke that habit and starting placing birthdays on the phone calendar and it pays off today. I think he will actually be surprised since my tract record isn’t that great when it comes to his birthday.
Since I am confessing some things, I will also admit I really don’t know how old he is this year. I wasn’t around when he was born so that’s my excuse. I know he is at least ten years older than me but it may be as many as 12 or 14 for all I know. But I have every intention to find that out when I call him, and that will go on the calendar too.
As some of you might know I am in the Rio Grande Valley this week and let me tell you, it is hot, and I don’t mean just hot… it is hot like Hades hot down here. In Rio Grande City on Tuesday it was 111 degrees with a “feels like” temperature of 115. Wednesday in Pharr, Texas it was 105 and the weatherman said it felt like 109. Over by the coast on Monday it was a comfortable 98 with a nice sea breeze coming in off the Gulf of Mexico, but the humidity was a killer so it was really more “un” than comfortable , as in uncomfortable. I spend a lot of time on construction sites in my line of work so between the heat, dust and humidity the shower at the end of the workday has been welcome relief for me.
Some of you also know the youngest boy is up in West Virginia this week with his youth group doing some volunteer work up there. His luck hasn’t been the greatest on this trip, the trip up there was pretty much uneventful and they made it to all there stops without any issues. Monday his group went out and started their work that day. His group’s project involved tearing down an old porch on a house and rebuilding it this week.
Monday evening after they had supper he started feeling ill, he was up most the night vomiting his guts outs, and he wasn’t alone as four others in their group of sixty all had come down with some stomach bug. Turned out that one of the girls on the trip had a little sister who was sick right before she left on the trip, the guess is she was the bug carrier as she was the first to come down with it about 12 hours before the other three. It ended up being just a 24 hour bug and he was back to working on Wednesday on the porch job.
I felt bad for him, being so far from home and sick, and not being able to do what you went there for, even if it was just for the one day. Hopefully he won’t have a relapse or those kids won’t keep passing it around since they are all in pretty tight quarters and spending basically day and night with each other, it will be interesting to know how that all plays out.
So does anyone else have any dates they have trouble remembering? I can tell you one date coming up that I won’t forget, July 23rd. The complete date would be July 23, 1994 to be exact, which was the day me and the Mrs. were married, so this coming Monday will mark 24 years for us. Monday will also be the day the youngest boy gets back from WVA so we will have plenty of things to talk about and celebrate Monday.
That should about bring us up to speed with how the week is going, so with that, I bid you a good day.
Until next time,
@sultnpapper
Sorry to hear about your son! For the life of me I can never remember my parent's wedding anniversary. I'm usually great with birthdays but their anniversary always eludes me. They never celebrated it when my brother and I were children so I think this is probably why I have such a problem with it now.

Thanks Eric, the boy is doing much better, and he only missed out working on Tuesday. I don't know when my parents anniversary was either, they weren't into celebrating it much like your parents. My wife's family is big on celebrating everything or at least used to be until my wife's mother passed away, she pretty much was the ring leader on the celebrations.

This excellent post was included in the latest issue of The Inbox Runneth Over. Stop by when you have a minute and see what else I found along the trail. Your companions here are all interesting in their own way, and your support for this project and especially its occupants would be very much appreciated. Thank you for everything. Have a lovely day!
Yes, I'm finally getting around to posting this comment. Don't ask.

I often forget our wedding anniversary! Our youngest has a birthday on 17 December so my focus is on that and then moves to Christmas preparations, with the result that 21 December gets neglected! We got married on that day so most of the family could be in Durban with the holidays.

Sounded like a good plan at the time for the wedding, having the baby that close to Christmas must have made that a rough year at the holidays on preparations

That it sure did, he was actually due on Christmas day but made a quick and grand entrance into the world...he still is like that, it's like a whirlwind hits the house yet our older son is as calm as can be:)

111 degrees! That's unimaginably hot, even though I don't really do Fahrenheit these days - I've got used to Celsius. I think 75 is a good temperature.
I'm pretty bad at birthdays, though usually I remember family ones. The one date I can NEVER remember is the "memorable date" for my bank account security. I can never remember which date I chose. Last time I phoned them I asked if I could have another security question instead of memorable date, but they insisted that it had to be a date. So I chose a new one - but I can't remember which date I chose.

You might want to go with January 1st as the date. and just update it every year with the current year. 1/1/18 or as you do 18/1/1.

Terrific post and it really hit home! Lately, my memory is much worse but I will blame some of it on the medications I take. I'm one of nine kids and I can only ever remember a couple birthdays but we didn't celebrate them too often and my parents even forgot a couple of birth dates (mine included). Mine was Dec 4th up until I needed to get a social security card to get a job. Another sibling experienced the same thing. I have to ask my kids or husband how old I am now. I guess I don't pay dates much mind and even forget my anniversary and not too many women forget that one..lol! Gee, maybe I do need to take this up with my primary care doc! 😉
I'm sorry to hear your youngest was sick and glad it was over quickly but also hope it stops there. I know you will be looking forward to his return and will have quite the celebration going on! Happy Anniversary to you and the Mrs!! ❤

Thanks @deerjay , yours might very well attributed to some meds, would not hurt to ask the doc. The other thing is, if you have more than one doctor be sure that they each know what the other is prescribing, I have seen that really screw with some people.
I know that he will probably be glad to get home too, the youngest boy, he isn't real big on travelling to begin with and he knows he has some chores that have been building up while he's been gone.
Thanks for the wishes, I pass that on to the Mrs.

Sorry, your son got ill on his trip. That really sucks. Hopefully, he will get to enjoy his weekend water park and water rafting!
I have a special calendar that I put special dates on. I am usually pretty good at remembering stuff but every once in a while I slip up especially with grandkids birthdays. I chalk it up to old-timers disease.
Happy 24th Anniversary to you both! Is it time for family BBQ brisket?

He is doing a lot better, he only missed working Tuesday. It does suck though, but it happens. He missed out that day but he new he couldn't be of any help since he wasn't sure he could even make it through the day without passing out from being up all night sick.
Thanks for the anniversary wishes, some days it seems like yesterday and other days it seems like it has been a lifetime. That would be a "no" on the brisket, the wife is a vegetarian, so it will be dinner out.

I have trouble remembering pretty much all the birthday dates.
We also have some national holidays that manage to surprise me every year. I am not that great with dates in general, really.

My only real problem is with birthdays, so I pretty much got it solved now. You should try using that calendar, it is standard on that phone and computer I am sure.

Reasonable, but I am pretty terrible at remembering looking at my calender to remember the national holidays I have trouble remembering.

i schedule it as an appointment, so it pops up on the front of my phone the day before, and then I keep "snoozing" it for 4 or 8 hours at a time in order to burn it into my brain, and the appointment is for 10:00 so I will know he will be awake when I call him.

I find it comical the number of times per day that I see people behind their technological advances. We have useful apps at our finger tips which displace piles of old gadgets, like the calendar.
I have a hard time remembering the dates of anarchists revolts, I read it again and again year after year.
No gods. No masters.

If we don't test our brains memory function I think we lose a good portion of it, as in memory; not brain matter per say, that is why I've held off relying on the gadgets for annual dates. Business stuff changes so fast , I couldn't keep track without the calendar function, 15 to 20 appointments a week would be a nightmare to try and keep straight from memory.

Dates, names... All these things I have always had trouble remembering! I plonk important birthdays in my google calendar now... And if face recognition worked with some sort of HUD display on my glasses....

Yes, the calendar that is tied to my outlook works best for me, that way I have all my work stuff and personal stuff as far as days and dates goes.
not sure I know what HUD is, care to explain that one to me?
Thanks,
@sultnpapper

A Heads Up Display. So, information is projected onto a screen that is in the view of what you are looking at, not needing to refocus your eyes off the subject that you are looking at. Most fighter keys have something similar, and some cars, and pretty much every computer game interface.
In this case it would project information into your glasses (like Google glass) or onto your retina, giving you an augmented reality. Adding information (like names) to what you can see.

I have trouble with my sister's birthday July 27, 1968 or July 28, 1967.
For my anniversary I tried to make it easy 3/9/93 but did not arrive in Vegas in time. It does not matter he is no longer with us.
You need a calendar with the dates on there. I am one to talk...........

I am doing good to get the day right, I called him and only got his voice mail, turns out he was over in Florida on vacation, so he texted me Thanks and a couple things about his vacation , so I still didn't get the year, but I'll just ask my sister one of these days, I am sure she will know it.

I'm just angry towards anyone who remembers anything... Ofcourse, it's nothing bad that you did, but if everyone could blackout and start fresh tomorrow, it will be the first day when you was you... Everyone I know, leaves in the past... but I'm the crazy one...
If you don't have a good replay, don't come tell me something stupid... Ur just part of the 98%...Go cry or pray...

I agree that when it comes to things it would be good if we could blackout and start fresh tomorrow but I think that would be impossible for the 2% since the majority of them seem to have some pretty big egos to go along with their wealth.
If there is one good thing about being in the 98% it is that a person should never lack for having company while crying or praying. Makes me wonder what if anything could ever bring about that day when the past never mattered any longer and only the present and future were relevant.
