This was a surprise for me that newborn babies don't need any toys. My little one did not touch a toy until he was 3.5 months old. By that age babies discover their arms and finally become interested in touching toys.
Infant babies do not play with toys, but they are extremely interested in looking at black and white images. You can print out some post card size simple pictures, and that's all you need to entertain your infant. Same print outs can be used to make a diy mobile for baby's crib or bassinet.
You can also place these black and white prints on the inside perimeter of your stroller, so baby has something to look at during walks.
Once baby becomes interested in touching, show him a soft crinkly book. He will love the sound and feeling of the pages.
A simple rattle can be used to place in baby's hand, so he can learn how to hold on to objects. It will take a few repetitions for him to learn.
I highly recommend to get an oversized play mat. It will provide hours of entertainment. It is a safe and soft playground for your little one. You can change the toys on it as your baby grows and develops new interests.
And of course the bouncy chair is a must to have. Babies love bouncing around. It doesn't have to be anything expensive. A cheap and simple bouncer goes a long way. If it vibrates or makes any sounds, that's a bonus and will keep your little one busy for some time.
