Homesteading And Self Sufficiency Involves Hunting And Processing Your Own Food.

Part of homesteading and self sufficiency is to provide for your own food. We hunt, fish and grow our own vegetables in order to provide for our own food. We also raise chickens for meat, eggs and fertilizer for our garden.

When you gather food from nature, it is generally much healthier and nutritious for you than that which was commercially grown and raised. The reason for this is simply the lack of chemicals, medicines and pesticides as well as the larger, open area wild game grows in. Our own garden is organic and free of any chemicals or pesticides. Chicken manure provides our fertilizer while tree mulch retains moisture and adds nutrients to the soil.

We hunt for food. This also cuts our grocery bill tremendously. This year a doe was eating from our garden in the late season after the snow started to fall. Most of our harvest was out but we were saving some of the cabbage family of plants for later eating. Well the deer got to it first.

That was no problem really because I simply found her favorite trails in our nearby woods and waited for hunting season to open up. At this time I went out and waited. Sure enough, she came along her favorite trail, heading to our open land.

I hauled her into our garaged and processed her myself.

Here I had a tough time skinning her though because she froze up solid on me:

After I got her skinning, I then began to process the meat. This took us a couple days because the meat was quite frozen solid. But it also meant that we were in no rush because it was not going to spoil on us any time soon.

Inside the house my wife cuts the meat off the bones. I bring in larger chunks while she processes it down into smaller bits and puts it into serving size portions for the freezer. Then it is back to me to put it out into the freezer until we need it for a meal.
