Diet for Bladder Spasms

in blog •  6 years ago

Bladder spasms are most commonly associated with an overactive bladder, which causes you to feel as though you need to urinate frequently and very suddenly. There aren't foods you can stock up on to treat this condition, but there are some you can include in your diet to aid in easing your bladder spasms, especially when they are caused by excessive straining during elimination due to constipation.

WATER

Staying hydrated is rule No. 1 for preventing constipation and can help ease the bladder spasms that cause an overactive bladder. According to the National Association for Continence, you need between six and eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and to encourage proper digestion. This reduces pressure on the bladder and the likelihood of spasms from occurring. Likewise, getting plenty of water reduces bladder irritation.

FRESH PRODUCE

Including fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet can ensure you're getting enough fiber, which is essential for preventing constipation and bladder spasms. According to MayoClinic.com, artichokes, broccoli, and turnip greens are the produce with the highest amounts of fiber with 5 g per serving, while raspberries offer 8 g of fiber per cup.

NUTS

Nuts and similar foods like legumes and seeds are high in fiber as well, which will help to prevent constipation and relieve bladder spasms. According to MayoClinic.com, the nut with the highest amount of fiber is the almond. Related high-fiber foods include sunflower seeds, split peas and black beans.

WHOLE GRAINS

Whole grains are another kind of food that promotes regular bowel movements and prevents bladder pressure. Foods you may wish to add to your diet to reap the high-fiber benefits include bran flakes, whole-grain bread, brown rice, oatmeal and whole-grain pasta.
