Board Game First Contact is a brief review of board games I have come across. I take a quick look at what the game is, how it is played, and my initial thoughts on it.
This issue we talk about Altiplano from Renegade Games.
Altiplano is a 2 to 5 player game set in the South American highlands of the Andes. The game uses a mix of resource management, engine building, and worker placement to progress through the turns.
The game seems very complicated after setup, however I found once I understood how the game progresses the complication deminished to pure strategy. There are a lot of resource tokens, locations, cards to manage. Through the course of the game you draw resources from your bag and place them on your tableu. You then move your meeple to a location where you use your resources to usually gain more resources. As the game progresses you will cycle your resources into your bag to be drawn out and used again. The game's final round occurs when one of the locations have been depleated of resources, and or cards.
The game is quite fun. While playing it I had a hard time seeing one strategy but multiple available. When I started I had bonus cards that included "Be the first with a completed row of fish in warehouse" and "have 5 corn in warehouse". So I started in on that. Taking fish, building road. The road allows you to draw more resources from your bag, which translates into more actions. I ran into a few issues with remembering my plan from between turns. I made a few costly mistakes.
