Time management

As a director, you know that there are never enough hours in the day. From emails to lots of meetings, your time is always under attack. As your workload increases, managing it correctly is increasingly difficult, but this is essential for effective leadership and stress prevention.

The first step in knowing how good you are managing your time is doing an audit to assess how much time you spend doing activities that consume your day. Then time management software, pending lists, calendars, and other apps can help you stay on track and better understand how effectively you are spending your time.

Delegating

Bosses usually battle to delegate. Do you enjoy doing it, or do you just feel more anxious? Delegating effectively not only avoids stress and fatigue among leaders, but it also improves the ability of a team. When leaders delegate carefully and deliberately, they empower their team members to add more responsibilities and expand their capabilities. Effective delegation involves five key steps:

Assess

Leaders must determine if a certain task should be delegated. If it is essential for long-term success and for the company's mission, they may not want to delegate it. Leaders should also assess whether they have enough time to effectively delegate work, since this should not be a quick hand transfer, but instead involves spending time training, reviewing progress and committing to constant communication.

Prepare

Leaders must be very clear about what is required. They must include clear and comprehensive information about times, budgets, objectives, frequency of communication and resources.

To assign

Leaders must determine which team members have the necessary capacity or experience to perform the task. Ideally, this should help in the growth of your employees.

Confirm understanding and commitment

Leaders often incorrectly assume that their employees understand what is expected of them. Ideally, confirm this understanding by asking employees to summarize the request and the requirement. Managers must also obtain an explicit commitment from their employees who must commit to the expected results, timing, resource requirements, and the established budget.

Avoid micromanagement

Once a leader delivers the baton, it is essential that they avoid micromanaging. If the employee encounters an obstacle, the leader must treat it as a learning opportunity and not take the reins. Effective coaching will help employees understand where the mistake was and empower them to succeed in the future.

If you struggle to delegate, consider making yourself a daily space to draw up an action plan. With careful planning, you and your team can succeed. And once you start delegating effectively, your team will dare to do so.

Avoid committing more

Are you constantly accepting more things than you can handle? Excessive commitments are very common among managers and leaders who accept tasks without considering whether they have enough time to execute them. But as the requests pile up on each other and the delivery times approach, the leaders get overwhelmed and feel stressed.

Excessive commitments can be devastating and lead you to a certain type of paralysis. The most effective antidote against excess commitments is to be firm and set limits. You must be very aware and protect your time by learning to say "no."
