A nice summer surprise.
This shriveled looking thing has been revived with new life-giving energy.
The goji berry pictured here was started as an indoor plant grown from a seed. One of the easiest seeds to grow. Buy a dried bag of berries, and stuff one berry into some potting soil. In a month or so, a new baby plant will sprout. Most dried goji berries are filled with one seed, and the seed will be viable as long as the fruit was properly dried and wrapped to preserve freshness.
Another great way to grow goji berry is to take a soft cutting from a green wood branch. I have another little goji berry tree growing in the shade that was started from a cutting. Only tried doing it once, and it succeeded. So I'm one for one, with a hundred percent success. Cowabunga dude!
This tree is on its second year. In hot sun and dry air, this tree sometimes becomes stressed and drops all its leaves. It's happened twice this year. I was able to revive this plant to life by keeping it under gentle light or shade from the sun, while keeping the plant and pot wrapped in a plastic bag to preserve moisture in the air. A warm humid environment tickles the branches into opening new leaf buds.
It will be very exciting to watch this goji berry develop into a future bonsai tree. It grows a lot like english thyme, with thin meandering branches that wiggle up into the air in random directions.
All of the trees in my bonsai collection are leafing out, so I thought I would start adding some spotlight photos of each tree to share. In my next series of bonsai articles, I'm going to start by posting all of my bonsai fruit trees. Other than goji berry, I also grow lime, lemon, apple, cherry, and grape.
Be sure to follow and add me to your feed to keep up with the latest and greatest things happening on my back porch. It's always my pleasure to share my gifts with my fellow friends.

Not yet.
Usually fruit trees do not start flowering until a few years later. They will produce fruit better if planted in the ground. Lots of deep roots help the trees to get the nutrients they need to build fruit.
My grapevine started making fruit last year, and it was delicious!
