At the end of July I may have mentioned that it seemed I was running out of books to read... but that has since been remedied, yay!
I realise that I last posted a book haul at the end of June, but that was intentional; since I already knew that September was going to see another massive Bargain Books warehouse sale, I didn't think that I'd be adding any books to my shelves until then - seems that I was able to acquire a couple books regardless...
Holiday Acquisitions
Every time I visit a place, whether new or old, for a brief sojourn, part of my adventures is to hunt down any and all bookstores, of the second hand variety; this time was no different.
Even though I was on a self imposed book buying ban (to spend more at the warehouse sale) buying a book while on holiday is a huge part of my holiday, so I would only buy one this time.
Daughter of the Flames by Zoë Marriott wasn't the only book to catch eye, not by a long shot; but others were available as sets, or too pricey. I was introduced to Zoë Marriott not too long ago with The Swan Kingdom, which I enjoyed very much, so I decided to go with Daughter of the Flames - I was intrigued, to say the least.
Then, on the very day I got back home, I just happened to notice this set of The Black Magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan just sitting on a shelf... the beauty of this particular second hand book store is that they will always sell the set together before selling them separately.
So, for R120.00, I not only got The Magicians Guild, but also The Novice and The High Lord, too!! I was ecstatic because I've been wanting to read Trudi Canavan for the longest time.
Book Club Splurges
I recently joined a newly formed book club for Capetonians and we had our first meeting in August; it was awesome! Of course, being on a book buying ban and all, I absolutely had to buy a book to commemorate this fabulous day.
So we all make our way to a conveniently placed Bargain Books SA store, to see what we could see; they had some amazing books on display and we easily spent another hour there, at least. But I had to have a thorough look because even though I was going to buy a book, I still wanted to spend as little as possible... you know?
I ended up choosing A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab because I've been looking for it for, like, forever! And, even though it cost more than I planned on, I still got it for a very good price!
Book Swap Realness
Most of us #SABookstagrammers participated in the second book swap of the year in July, Loadshedding Survival Kit, where we each sent our partners a box filled with a book and some goodies to match the theme.
If you're interested in seeing the box I put together for my swap partner, click here: https://mrpinkink.wordpress.com/2019/07/28/pinkitup-book-swap-box-2-loadshedding-survival-kit/
Samantha couldn't resist sending me A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas when she discovered that I'm like the only person in existence that still hasn't read it.
Everybody Loves A Winner
I was also fortunate enough to win a couple of local giveaways on Instagram and the books all arrived in August.
Imagine my surprise when I opened the package from Lee (@octothorpereaderleorak) to discover not just 1 book but FOUR!! I even went back to the original post to check the photo!!
Tad Williams is an old favourite of mine and I absolutely loved his series, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn - I really need to get this series again and have a reread... Anyway, The Heart of What Was Lost takes place just after the end of the series and I'm super excited for it!
Faithful by Alice Hoffman is the second title of hers I now have and have yet to read.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw The Shell Collector by Anthony Doerr because I've been wanting to read All The Light We Cannot See, so this is a reminder to get it.
But my favourite has to be the paperback copy of Sleight of Hand by Jason Hes and Ilse V Rensburg (find my full review here: https://mrpinkink.wordpress.com/2019/03/23/pinkreads-book-review-025-sleight-of-hand-by-jason-hes-ilse-v-rensburg/) which is SIGNED by both authors!!!
Be sure to check out the other titles available at Sera Blue Publishing.
Oh, did I mention I also won a copy of The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon? How could I forget such a significant, EPIC book? lol
I am beyond excited for winning Sam's (girlreviewsbooks on Instagram) giveaway on Instagram, sponsored by Jonathan Ball, and I really, really need to read it!!!
And that, as they say, is that and I'm all the more richer for it. But I would also Love to know which books you picked up recently, newest purchases, giveaway wins, review copies - let me know in the comments below. Until next time...
Keep smiling
