Snapshot - BOOK REVIEW

in bookreview •  6 years ago

Hi Steemians!

I'm still struggling to get my family healthy...and my body has finally succumbed to all the bugs flying around here😷 Luckily a sore throat and cough doesn't affect my hands and eyes...so I can still read and still write reviews 😂 It might affect my brain's ability to process and focus though, so please excuse any grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes😅

My Review:

As you can probably tell by now, I really enjoyed this one 😜
This whole story basically plays of in a ‘Snapshot’.
A “Snapshot” is a time and space recreated exactly as it was in reality and for all intents and purposes looks and feels (smells, tastes and reacts) like real life. However it is not real and after it has served its purpose the whole “thing” is shut down and seizes to exist. The people inside the snapshot do not know they aren’t real, for them it is life as normal.

“It wasn’t just some virtual simulation either. If you’d place this burrito beside one from the real world, even an electron microscope couldn’t have detected the difference.”

Okay, so we’ve got two detectives, partners, Davis and Chaz who are sent into a particular Snapshot. They don’t necessarily go in to solve the case, but to be eyewitnesses and to gather evidence in order to form a solid court case against the accused.

“To the rest of the department they were errand boys, sent to retrieve specific data and nothing else.”

Nothing from the Snapshot can be taken out (aka no physical evidence) and there are a lot of do’s and don’ts as deviations within the Snapshot will occur as the “IRL”(in real life) people interact with this “created” environment. (Nothing that happens in a Snapshot effects REAL life…even if a Snapshot person dies it doesn’t effect the real person. The only real alive thing in the Snapshot are the detectives) They need to keep the Snapshot as close to reality as possible for any evidence to be admissible in court. There are so many interesting facets surrounding this concept that you know how well it was thought through. It made it even more intriguing to gather all this special workings and getting to understand it throughout the book.

“Well, either way, it was a tool that—even years into the program—nobody understood, let alone knew how to properly exploit. But that still didn’t explain why they’d hide so much from the cops working in them.”

A very interesting plot with a character driven storyline and a dynamic relationship between the two partners, who differ quite a bit. Brandon Sanderson found the perfect balance, which had an integral part in enjoying the story as it progressed. Throw in the word “conspiracy” as they land in an investigation where they are clearly not wanted and add a splash of humour and you’ve got yourself a perfect novella.

You might start reading this book and think that it will be just a simple detective story, but with a delicious twist that got my heart pumping, even with the clues given I had NO clue. Brandon Sanderson did a great job of blindsiding me and therefor I do not wish to spoil it for anyone else.
As this was my first book by Brandon Sanderson and he has really impressed me, I am super eager to read more books by him!
