There's value in old books

I work at a second hand bookshop and we buy people's unwanted books. There are often all sorts of things inside them: old bookmarks, airline tickets, photographs and newspaper or magazine pages, either reviewing the book, or on the same subject, if it's a non-fiction book. Occasionally, we find bank notes - anything from old 2 and 5 notes that have been replaced by coins to larger denominations that were put in the book and forgotten about.

Once, we had a man come in to the store to sell some expensive collector's items because he was broke and he was really sad to be parting with his books. A price was agreed upon and the man was paid. As he was leaving, my boss flipped one of the books open and money rained down all over the floor. It amounted to a few thousand and was returned to the rightful owner, who said that he had misplaced this cash some time ago. Because he had now got a similar amount to what he received for his books, my boss asked whether he still wanted to sell his books but he had made up his mind to part with them.

At least that seller got quite a bit more than he had bargained on but that story has made me mindful of not casually placing money inside books because once you start looking for it, you seldom think to check your books and I have occasionally done exactly what this particular seller had done. I also think of all the photos we find that were lost that way. While some of them have been fairly trivial in subject matter, some were clearly more important than that but had been used as bookmarks, probably because they were at someone's bedside.

We often get books when people are moving house or in a frenzy to 'tidy up my life!'. Sellers often part with more than they intended.

I have a lot of books.
I gave several pieces to my friends.
But before I give it, I always check the book.
It's strange to me that others do not!

It's amazing what can be lost in books

:-)))

The forgetful mind at play. :-)

Aint that the truth!

Thats really nice that the broke man got more cash than he was expecting, and that he hadn't left the shop before it was found.

He was very lucky. Sometimes we know customers and can contact them but often, we don't

I love my old books

i loved old book, book is the key of success, when all side close are you dont mean what to do then start read the book. surely got a very nice idea or path to go and achive success. great post dear

Very lucky seller!!
You may be surprised at one people will pay for old fiat currency...
Hang on to that stuff 😊

Nice to see you back !

With banknotes, only mint condition notes with AA serial numbers are worth anything

What an interesting post. We have a church in our city that has become known for its annual book sale of 40,000 used books. Sometimes I wonder if the same books return each year!

It's likely that a certain percentage do. Sometimes you can pick up amazing bargains at church sales. Dealers often go to see what they can find

Always wise to double check books before getting rid of them! We had an elderly auntie who passed away back in the late 1990s and she had lots of books... she was also a child of the depression, so she "saved" a lot for the next "rainy days." We found scads of unused postage stamps (at least 200 USD face value), some 1000 USD in (quite old) cash and even a couple of savings bonds in her encyclopedias and other large reference books. It was quite the treasure hunt!

What a story! I can imagine all those old photos and bookmarks would look cool in some kind of display behind the glass...

There is also a second hand book store in Wroclaw (my almost home town). It was special not only for the books, but for the big, ginger cat that lived there. He was always sleeping on the windowsill display... or just walking around the bookshelves.
His name was Dante :)

not my photo

We also have some cat visitors to the shop and they are much appreciated

I put a rare Friends (the TV serie) telephone card in a book in order to preserve it because I hope sell it someday in Internet. I am still looking for it : (

Aw, dang!

If I ever visit Johanessburg.. I'll go there to get a book! I love second hand book stores, for me there's a lot of stories and feelings there.. They once belonged to someone, they got it in a specific time of their life with all the stuff going on!

Some of the inscriptions in books are pretty strange

Haha strange how?

Hello, I see you are a bookworm, could you please take a loot at my latest post and tell me what kind of book you think it is?
First booklover I found so thought I would ask here, no need to upvote the post just some information about what kind of book I have would be amazing!
If this is bothering you I apolagize, I am just eager to find out!

Not bothering me at all and I gave an opinion on the book on your post.
Further thoughts:
It may not help to go and ask someone in the Israeli community because although it's in Hebraic script, an old book like that is likely to be in Yiddish, not the Hebrew language, which was revived as a language around the time of the formation of the state of Israel. Old books from Europe may very well be in Yiddish, which is now mostly a dead language.

Amazing, you know your stuff! great!
thanks for the tip I will go find a israeli community.
