BOOK REVIEW: "The Old Man and the Sea" - Ernest Hemingway

in books •  8 years ago

Hemingway is a genius of literature and it was for this book that he won the Nobel Prize.

This is the second book of his that I have read and now I can firmly say I am in love with his writing. What touches me the most, is the simplicity of words and the elegant beauty they convey. It's like every word is essential and is in flow with the narrative.

I may be wrong, but it seemed to me that this was a story of a man and the sea, with no metaphors lying beneath the surface. That is, the story was enough in and of itself, without needing for a deeper meaning. Or maybe I missed something...

This story, The Old Man and the Sea, is short. It is a long short story. Having no chapters, it is perfect for one long, leisurely read without interruption on a lazy Sunday morning.

It's been a long time since i read that book. I would take two positions on the book. I'd first say that Hemingway a rugged man who enjoyed the simplicity of nature could have meant it to be just that. We also know that Hemingway was quite conflicted through stages of his life.

Some would interpret the books as a way to make meaning from suffering. Again i could personally just see Hemingway being fascinated with a man going out to get his food for the day. So perhaps you're right. Maybe it's just a well written book about the story as it were.

Such a great little book. Hemingway is the man.
