BookWorm LightReads Challenge#1: Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper

in bookworm •  6 years ago

Hi Bookworms. We have finally reach this momentous moment wherein we will be launching our first "LightReads Challenge". It has been fun consolidating all your feedback and comments on how we can make this initiative work. I am very grateful for the support and the funding that we were able to pool to run our challenges.

Before anything else, let's define first what "light reading" is. According to Collins, light reading is a type of reading which is not considered too demanding or intellectual. Basically we do it, either to pass time, read during breaks, without taking too much of our time.

Our vision: "Igniting the Learner In You Through Reading"

Our first challenge, was submitted by yours truly via the GameMaster's Challenge. Hoping and looking forward to your entries as well so we can have more fun with our challenges moving forward.

I. Reading Material

For this challenge I want us to take a read "Little Engine that Could", written by Watty Piper. The story exists in the form of serveral illustrated children's books and even movies. It is an American fairytale that is used to teach children the value of optimism and hardwork.

You can read the story here: Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper

Duration: ~2 minutes

Source: Scholastic

NOTES: What are needed here: (1)a brief introduction about the story, (2)a link or pdf copy (should be ready to read), (3) duration of the read, and (4) n image that will serve as contest banner, any image will do as long as you properly credit the source.

II. Why Recommend This Material?

This is a very simple story but it has quite a nice philosophical ring to it. Specifically, I wanted to know how adults process children stories. Do adults read children's book as is? Or do we spend time to process the lessons and the story?

For this challenge, I want people to look at children's stories beyond putting your childrens to bed. But see it as another learning opportunity. A time to be immersed into the story, a time to chill and relax, and a time to reflect.

III. Though Provoking Questions

I actually have a lot. But I found a good resource that deeply talks about the lessons we can derive from the story. These are actually a group of questions, you don't have to answer each one of them, you can just pick one or two. But it would be great to know your thoughts about these questions.

TPQ#1 Subjective Opinions

The train is carrying toys and food for good girls and boys. What makes a good toy or good food change from person to person.
What is your favorite toy?
What is your favorite food?
What is the best toy or food for everyone? Is there one?

TPQ#2 Little Engine

I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.

What makes this train different?
Why does the train want to help?
What is different about how this train thinks?
What do the words I think I can, I think I can, I think I can mean?
Have you ever tried to do something difficult?
Does believing in yourself make it easier? Does it make you braver?

TPQ#3 Relativism

What makes morals different from opinions? Is there such a thing as subjective morality?

Did the little engine do the right thing?
Did the other trains do the wrong thing?
Each train thought they were doing the right thing. Does this change anything?
Did the way that they thought about themselves change how they made their decision?
How do we know what the right thing to do is?
Is there one right thing for everybody? Think back to how everyone had different foods and toys.
