So you want to run a voting bot?

in bots •  7 years ago

With the price of Steem at near record-highs and SBDs through the roof, voting bots have been providing very attractive returns and have been drawing lots of attention. Hardly a day goes by now where I don’t get a request from someone about how to start their own voting bot. So rather than have the same conversation with everyone individually, I thought I would make a post about it so everyone can learn what’s involved.

Steem Power

First and foremost, if you want to run a voting bot, it will need to have a good amount of Steem Power. I would recommend 10,000 SP at a minimum, and obviously the more the better. If that sounds like too much, you might also look into delegating to an existing bot that pays out earnings to delegators such as @msp-bidbot, @jerrybanfield, @smartsteem or many others. Be sure to check how much of the earnings are paid out to delegators vs other things.

If you really want to run a bot but don’t have enough SP yourself, the other option is to lease it. You can lease it directly from a whale (although I don’t advise spam-messaging random whale accounts) or try a delegation market like the one on minnowbooster.net.

Please keep in mind that it is currently very difficult to lease any significant amount of SP since it is in huge demand and short supply, so you’ll have to pay very high prices if you’re even able to get it at all.

Setup and Hosting

Once you’ve secured your Steem Power, and decided you don’t want to just delegate to an existing bot (which is really the best option in most cases, in my opinion) then it’s time to set up your bot.

The first thing you will need is a server. I strongly suggest getting a server hosted in an actual data center and not just something you’re running from your home. You can run a micro sized instance on AWS for free for a year, which is what I would recommend.

Now that you have your server set up you’ll need to choose the bot software to run. Most of the bots currently use the “drotto” software created by @inertia which is available here: https://github.com/inertia186/drotto. I am admittedly quite biased when I say that I prefer the Post Promoter software (because I created it!) which you can find here: https://github.com/MattyIce/postpromoter

You’re also more than welcome to create your own software or modify either of the two existing software packages above if you’re so inclined. I would encourage you to make your software open source or submit pull requests to the main repos with your changes so everyone can benefit from them if you go this route.

Anyway, both software packages have some setup instructions in the readme but it will require some general knowledge about server/system setup so, frankly, if you don’t know what you’re doing then you probably shouldn’t be running your own bot.

Bot Hosting as a Service

If you have no idea what I was talking about in the section above, but you really want to have your own bot - don’t worry, there is still a solution for you!

Since the creation of the Post Promoter bot software I’ve encountered many people who either don’t have the technical expertise to run a bot, or just would rather have someone else do it for them, so in a sort of joint-venture between myself and @aggroed we have started a SAAS (Software As A Service) solution for bot hosting.

What this means is that you set up an account, get some Steem Power in it, and we do the rest! Then you can just sit back and collect the earnings. We charge a 5% fee which is automatically deducted after each bidding round and the rest is automatically transferred to an account or accounts of your choice.

We are currently hosting 8 different voting bots with a combined total of more than 2 million Steem Power and we make sure the bots we host are run properly and never miss a vote or a refund.

In Conclusion

Bid bots are a great way for passive investors who don’t have time for manual curation to make a nice return on their investment in the Steem platform. I know of a few investors who have or are considering putting a good bit of money into Steem for this reason, which is an opportunity that’s not available on any other blockchain platforms that I’m aware of.

The best option (in my opinion) is to just delegate SP to an existing bid-bot such as the ones I listed above. Each of those does take a cut of the earnings but if you have a large amount of SP to delegate and want a higher return contact me on https://steemit.chat or on the PALnet Discord.

If you would prefer to run your own bot and you have the technical experience to set up a server and the bot software then go for it! Otherwise feel free to contact me to see if our managed solution is right for you.

Nice initiative @yabapmatta and it's good to have all voting bots in one place. The bot tracker is a really nice idea and well implemented.

Could you add @sleeplesswhale to the voting bots list?

Thank you for the mention of @smartsteem - @yabapmatt!

Your bottracker is amazing!

This is an awesome post.
I was waiting for something like that. Thanks for sharing this great information. I will definitely contact you my friend, I want to have one :)

@modernpastor

Hey @modernpastor, awesome to see a pro football player on here! Or soccer as we call it in the US.

Definitely reach out on discord or https://steemit.chat and we can set something up!

OK this was super informative. I saw @jerrybanfield requesting proxy assignment and promoting his bot a few days ago but was not fully up to speed on what it all meant. Much clearer idea on how it works now. I'm interested in you SaaS solution.

Yep jerry’s bot is running on our service as well actually. Get in touch if you want to set something up yourself!

@yabapmatt, I think I mentioned this on another recent post of yours, but thank you for your work on the steem bot tracker! It's an invaluable resource. Now, if all the other users would stop sniping votes and killing my ROI! ;-)

Also, wanted to let you know I put my vote in for you as a witness. Just a small token of my appreciation. Keep doing what you're doing!

Thanks @beauknows, I really appreciate it and I'm glad you find the bot tracker so valuable!

I always check your bot tracker website https://s3.amazonaws.com/yabapmatt/bottracker/bottracker.html before i place a bid. Love it! . I hope your site helps as many as much as it did me. I would love to hear more about a bot you managed and how it grows? 100% upvote and resteem

Good afternoon, I do not know how to bet on those bots, I do not understand how you could explain it to me? How is the payment process and all that?

Yes I want to know!!!

hi @jbfa, it's pretty simple - you just send the amount of STEEM or SBD that you want to use to promote your post to one of the bot accounts with a link to your post as the memo.

If you're new to the process I suggest using the Steem Bot Tracker Website and sending only to bots that have the green auto-refund icon. Those bots will automatically refund your money if you do anything wrong so they are good for beginners.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Once I have my bot up and running and it has tested out okay how do I add it to the bot tracker? is it currently a manual list your keeping? If so can you please add me to the list. Thanks

It is a manual list for right now, so get in touch with me on steemit.chat or discord when you're ready and i'll check it out.

I did bid on @appreciator bot and it is showing 3x vote but I got only 2x vote. When I contacted to @bluemist he told it is a fault of bot tracker, but what about loss happened due to this ill-information? Thanks!

I am editing this comment because I realize in retrospect that I should have responded differently. @chetanpadliya, despite all of the work I have done the bot tracker site will never be 100% accurate in all instances. There are numerous warnings on the site, including one that requires you to actively acknowledge that you have read and understood it, that explain this and advise you to do your own research and double check any numbers.

It sounds like you still received a pretty good return on your investment, and the bots are not about making a quick buck, but rather about promoting your post to gain more followers and more organic upvotes, which it sounds like you have done.

My advice to you in the future is to ask questions and try to understand what's going on if something doesn't happen the way you expect rather than try to place blame and hold others responsible.

I am not complaining that I got only 2X, concern is that it is still showing 3X there and got vote only 2X. Thank you!

2xs? send me the information of the bot please...good ROI indeed

haha =D

Great info. Going to check out your post promotor software.

Thank you for the help. I will definitely look into this.

looks like steemit will be full of voting bots by the way things are going, but its a profitable venture so why not, all i need is a lot of voting power

That's really cool. Simply for that you get my vote for witness. Greetings

You got a 100.00% upvote from @yourwhale courtesy of @yabapmatt!

Thank you Yabapmatt "the bot king" :)

I support your projects, ideas and visions,, I am still new to steemit, so my vote or any support can not come to your advantage,,But you are our encourager, I can learn a lot from you. . Excellent post. . keep it up @yabapmatt

Thank you fo information

Great post. I so much admire this and resteemed so I come back to it for info. What is the minimum amount of space to get good daily income when you delegate your special and do they pay what % ROI?

great post @yabapmatt. is it possible to create a bot with a small amount of steem and let it grow by re-investing all income, for instance utilising your SAAS ? the answer may be no, but if so, what's the minimum steem one could start with. Thanks, a very useful post

If you have a small amount of steem and want to earn a return on it I would suggest delegating it to one of the other bots I suggested that pay out the earnings to delegators. Then you can power up the earnings and re-invest by delegating more over time.

It's just not worth it for me to host a bot that has less than 10k SP - it takes the same amount of work as a bot with 1M SP but pays out much less. Also I generally feel that it is better for everyone to have fewer, larger bots, than a bunch of small bots like those that are popping up now - so I encourage everyone to delegate rather than start their own.

thanks for your answer @yabapmatt. makes perfect sense. I think I'll have to look into ROI on various bot delegations. I understand that unless you have a serious amount of voting power it's not worth the time and energy. Great work, there are a lot of crumby bots on the loose ! ;)

I definitely need to get some more SP.

So that I can run a bot to read posts, upvote the good ones AND make excellent, or funny comments.

This will free up a lot of time for me, so I can read more steemit posts.

Yeah. I thought of that sometime back but it skipped me to ask you. Thanks. Cuts my work short. Hehe

This post was really educative.

I had no idea managed bot solutions were available. Might be worth looking into the future for myself, but for now I'm just a small fish swimming in an ocean. ;)

Hi and thank you for the article!
What do you think, what is the minimum SP to run a voting bot? (if we talk not even about real profits, but about the efficiency)
I want to dream about it :)

I recommend at least 10,000 steem power to run a voting bot. Even that is really a bare minimum - at that level I think you're still better off delegating to an existing bot instead. But some people really want to have their own bot.

Thank you for detailed and understandable answer!
Well, I'll have to work hard :)

this post is full of useful information of steem.thank for sharing

Very good article for those who want to become vote bot

well @yabapmatt i have been trying to understand these bot services , but as far as i have read till now . yesterday i made a 12 sbd bid on a bot and that gave me a total of 32 sbd vote and then after curation time it suddenly dropped to 26 which gave me 9.3 sbd & 3 steem approx , i guess i need to learn first , but i don't find one guide at a time , its just so much to read here and there . i try to read your articles as much as i can , but is there any chance to go chapter by chapter ? Ehhh ?

Hey @gleek - unfortunately things are very complicated right now as you mentioned. The issue is that the steemit.com UI shows post rewards with a dollar sign (even though they are not dollars) and assumes that 1 SBD = 1 USD, which is not even remotely true anymore.

To deal with this by default the bot tracker site shows all values in actual USD and does all the currency conversions for you based on the current rates. Nevertheless it is still an overly confusing situation and I wish there was something more I could do about that.

You can feel free to reach out to me on steemit.chat or discord if you have any specific questions...i would be happy to help out!

No .. I just found your posts that were something in common peoples language .. so I thought maybe I should ask ... Even there is no complete guide to steem itself .. I guess first I need to read a lot about it then come back here .. else its wasting time here

https://steem.ly/ig this is what i was looking for ! this guy is doing step by step guide , finally found it :)

Thanks for the link.. I am looking for it too

I have some plans to build some various bots to earn SBD, Steem, Followers, Re-steems, etc... Thanks for this informative article.

good stuff @yabapmatt i will follow it up in the next few weeks.. keep up the great work.. :}

@postpromoter, nice post, very insightful but I have a question.
How does one contact you to handle his bot?
Thanks again!

i started using bidbot not until my post got flag 19 hours for using a bid bot

@yabapmatt i have little knowledge about the server and languages but i have some questions .. like is bot power recharge/refill every 2.4hrs ? and i am college student doing computer science as you know students have litle assets so i cant start bot as a huge investment if you have some policy in giving a loan or something ? you can charge 50% even 80% until your loan recover. I hope you help me i need some kind of investor for me i know you will think why "i gave him", but think your help changes someone life. i am not asking for too much investment just a little for new start, you can also talk with your team members like @@@aggroed may be someone do for me ..
thankyou

@buildawhale bot . this is good or bad .please explain me.

How do I set up a bot @yabapmatt with no knowledge? Something along the lines of SAAS

I love this post. I am really learning a lot here.

Lol I see many shit posts get thousands of dollars this post deserved to hit those thousands of dollars.

I sent sbd to bot @boomerang and then I did not vote but lost sbd. How do I do?

Thank you Matt for this post! I have vested my steem power and now understand where it’s going and what’s happening. Sincerely, @joeparys

Not a techy guy at all, however want to set up a bot on this account. The difference is that the only content that is voted for is charity based content.

Help appreciated.

Thanks

Yo dude.
Interested in setting up a voting bot. Does this still work with HF20?
