Welcome to my first entry to #bouldersunday. Behold, Beacon Rock!
Beacon Rock is an 848-foot tall basalt volcanic plug in Washington on the north bank of the Columbia River. In other words, this rock used to be a plug inside the vent of a volcano!
Beacon Rock is one of the largest free-standing monoliths in the world. A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock and the big ones like this are often exposed by erosion of the surrounding rock.
The cool thing about this boulder is there is a hiking trail to the top! It is almost a mile long and gains 600+ verticle feet on the way.
