La deforestación también afecta a las áreas naturales protegidas. Según los datos del monitoreo que realiza el gobierno brasileño a través del INPE, en el 2012 se presentó la deforestación más baja de la historia del Brasil desde 1988. Ese año la pérdida de bosque llegó a 450 000 hectáreas (4500 kilómetros cuadrados)
