Rule #1 of Trading: Never invest more than what you can afford!
This happened a hundred of times with several financial instruments (stocks, forex, etc.) and as @crypt0 said you should be disciplined enough to set stops/trailing stops.
Believing or not in Ether is not the question and it is no different from any other currency or stock. Sometimes this things happen! Always be prepared!
